Mountain Crime Preview (PC)

Alawar has announced their upcoming adventure/hidden object game, Mountain Crime. The game is a pure detective mystery set in a remote hotel in the mountains. The game will have no supernatural element, instead it draws inspiration for characters and mystery from the Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None.

Avernum: Escape from the Pit Preview (PC, Mac,
iPad)

After giving us Avadon: The Black Fortress, Spiderweb Software went back to its beloved Avernum series (of which there are already six in-depth indie RPGs) for inspiration. The result is the upcoming Avernum: Escape from the Pit, the first chapter in a new fantasy RPG saga that tells the tale of "desperate exiles and their battle for survival and a land to call their own."

Ninja Baseball Bat Man is a... about... wait... WHAT!?!? screenshot

Guys. Guys. Hey guys. There is a 1993 arcade game from Irem called Ninja Baseball Bat Man. There is a game called Ninja Baseball Bat Man. A game called Ninja Baseball Bat Man. Ninja Baseball Bat...

Why are we only learning about this now, dammit!?

Thank you, James Rolfe, for unearthing this Holy Grail. I share your sentiments in hoping that somebody has the sense to bring this to a digital download service, any digital service!

Bane to be a playable character in Batman: Arkham
City

Bane to be a playable character in Batman: Arkham City screenshot

After their somewhat (read: hugely) successful attempt at a Batman game with Arkham Asylum, developer Rocksteady hasn't shied away from taking full advantage of the Batman license. Arkham City is jam-packed with a bevy of the Caped Crusader's allies and adversaries.

Both Talia Al Ghul and The Penguin were announced earlier this month and, via the Arkham City Comic-Con panel, we know that Bane will join the cast of characters available to fight at the Dark Knight's side.

It's interesting to see Bane on this side of the story. It's not an altogether new event -- Bane was always conflicted character -- but it's an interesting angle to take on the villain.

They've also released a handful of new screens showing the aforementioned 'ally' as well as Catwoman, and the Batman himself. You can find the full panel here for some interesting talk amongst the cast.

Jagged Alliance is Back in Action

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - Jagged Alliance was one classic 90s series that I missed back in the day. The turn-based isometric combat series has its fans, and after a promising DS remake of the original game in 2009, Kalypso is rebooting the sequel into Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. While this trailer is mostly pre-rendered, supposed we can expect the same top-down gameplay of the original series, but with new graphics and gameplay techniques.

League of Legends: 15 million strong

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - Riot Games just wants you to know that League of Legends now hosts over 15 million registered players, with 1.4 million logging on every day to get their fix back in the action. At last count I'm not sure if that beats WoW yet but it is a strong argument for a free-to-play model done right. Penny Arcade might make some well-intentioned jabs about the game's revenue model, but it looks like at least one studio is already doing what Extra Credits suggested.

The Old Republic: Join the Fight

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - Now that we finally have a holiday release window, here's the latest Old Republic trailer from Comic Con. I have to say, these trailers are about ten times better than the Star Wars prequels, with only 90% of the CGI. Zing!

Supreme Ruler: Cold War gets a demo

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - Paradox has some new goodies out for Supreme Ruler: Cold War, the latest in their dictatorial combat RTS. The demo is out and ready for download, and if you need some help getting the hang of things once you're playing the demo there's a handful of helpful tutorial videos at the game's Youtube channel. With Modern Warfare pitting the ultra-nationalist Russians against, well, the world, and RTS's like Supreme Ruler exploring the potentially nuclear past, I guess Russia still has some time left as a generic video game villain. I'm not knocking the game, but am I the only one who thinks the current "Russa=bad guy" trend is in kind of poor taste, or at least rather boring and unimaginative?

Spider-Man Edge of Time Comic Con trailer

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - If you missed the Spider-Man Edge of Time trailer from Comic Con last week, here it is in all it's cinematic glory. I'm still a little confused by the fixation on a meh character like Spidey 2099, but at leas it looks more focused than Shattered Dimensions. I'm just not sold on the linear action-brawler, God of War rip-off direction Beenox keeps exploring.

I thought the free-roaming New York sandbox in Spider-Man 2 was the perfect formula for a Spidey game. Sure Spider-Man 3 sucked big time, but Ultimate Spider-Man was fantastic; with a little polish and innovation, and maybe the damn web powers they keep forgetting, another sandbox Spidey could be, well, amazing.

'We are ROCK-MEN!' CD keeps the Mega Man spirit
alive

'We are ROCK-MEN!' CD keeps the Mega Man spirit alive screenshot

See? What did I tell ya? Though Mega Man games may very well have gone the way of the dodo, the merchandising train is just picking up steam!

A few members of the Capcom Sound Team have joined forces to form a Mega Man cover band called ROCK-MEN. Their debut project, We are ROCK-MEN!, is a rock arrange album spanning both the Classic and X series. Now, there have been an absurd number of Mega Man music compilations over the years, but even though they cover a lot of the same material, the different styles of arrangement and composition keep the music fresh and, most importantly, fun.

In the demo clip above, the ROCK-MEN do their rendition of the Dark Man theme, the hands-down best track off of Mega Man 5. Just a few seconds in, I could feel my wallet getting heavier in my pocket. When this baby drops on September 21 for 2100 yen (about $27), you can count on me to be among the first to snatch it up like a relapsed heroine addict!
