New Kinect bundle with Child of Eden incoming

New Kinect bundle with Child of Eden incoming screenshot

Prior to Child of Eden releasing, I think many of us told ourselves that it'd be the game to make us buy into Kinect. If, like me, you backed down on such self promises, Microsoft has a bundle for you. Starting next week, Q-Entertainment's dreamlike rhythm game will be included with Kinect Sensor bundles.

These will also include Kinect Adventures as always, but are only going to be sold in limited quantities. Look for special packaging which denotes that a download code for Child of Eden is in the box. With The Gunstringer rapidly approaching, this seems like a decent enough time to go controller free.

David Jaffe's PAX Prime 2011 keynote

David Jaffe's PAX Prime 2011 keynote screenshot

video details and more

David Jaffe kicked off PAX Prime 2011 this year and his keynote address was simply mesmerizing. Here's a man who has done amazing things in the videogame industry bearing it all, including all the hardships that's come with the job.

David spent an hour describing everything from how he first started in the gaming industry to how he felt he was losing his touch. He also cussed a lot, which I f*cking loved.

Kickstarter Picks: Insane Arcade (iPhone)

If you?re a lifelong gamer, there?s a good chance that you?ve at least once daydreamed about owning your very own arcade. The lights, the sounds, the feel of the coin dispenser belt as it hangs from your jeans. Owning a real arcade, though, isn?t a very profitable idea. But owning a virtual arcade? That?s where the money is ?at least that?s what Joe Heitzman is hoping.

Pikmin 2 has unused music: It is my new jam

Pikmin 2 has unused music: It is my new jam screenshot

video details and more

Like a lot of people, I love Pikmin. What appears to be a cute, relatively kid-feiendly game is actually a tale of potentially endless, unspeakable horrors. It's one of the few series that is simply too stressful for some people to play. It's so easy to become attatched to your army of little baby carrot people, that death of even one tiny soldier has been enough to cause more than one of my friends to put down the game for good, unable to move on due to insurmountable guilt.

Part of that is because of the game's incredible sound design. The adorable little sounds that the Pikmin make (have meow, half bird tweet) immediately capture the hearts of most players, and likewise, their sorrowful (but still cute) death rattles (and accompanying ghost forms) are both subtly, but intensely effective. The excellence doesn't end there. The game's entire soundtrack is a surrealist soundscape classic, filled with different idea and concepts should the listener care to find them. I could listen to it all day.

That's why I'm so happy that this unused "song" was found on the Pikmin 2 disc. It's hard to tell if it's even finished, and yet, I still love it. I can only hope someone remixes this and turns it into a Bossa Nova song about Purple Pikmin eating grape jelly (and by "someone", I mean "me".\

Checking out Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown at
PAX

Checking out Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown at PAX screenshot

The recent announcement of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network during the summer of 2012 was great news to many fans in the fighting game community. The Virtua Fighter series is regarded by many to be one of the most balanced and hardcore fighters out there, and it garnered even more attention when Virtua Fighter 5 champion Fuudo took the championship in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition at EVO this year.

Final Showdown has actually existed in Japanese arcade since 2010, but there was no way for American fans to check it out besides flying around the world. Consider how surprised the PAX crowd was when the local Seattle Gameworks announced that Sega had sent over one of the Japanese cabinets for the attendees to check out.

Not only that, but our friends at iPlaywinner hosted a live stream of the game for people at home to watch. I was able to sit down with Patrick Riley, director of international product development at Sega to talk about this anticipated release.

Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown is the second major upgrade to Virtua Fighter 5 in America since it was released in 2007. In this version, due to come out in the summer of 2012, one of the most noticeable changes is the addition of two characters. Taka-Arashi from Virtua Fighter 3 makes his return after being considered too difficult to incorporate into VF4 and VF5. The second character is French karate fighter Jean Kujo.

Besides these two new characters, Final Showdown also boasts new stages, such as a retangular stage that allows for ring outs only on one side and several new stages with breakable walls. Cosmetically, this version looks great, with improved animations and lighting, as well as making it easier for people to see things such as block animations.

Under the hood, the fighting system has been retooled to make this game more accessible to series beginners while trying to maintain the mind games and balanced gameplay that seasoned players enjoy. In other words, Sega wanted to make sure the core system was the same, while simplifying some controls to make most moves easier to pull off for newcomers.

According to Patrick, Sega was committed to listening to the fighting game community, and while they couldn't deliver on a famous petition to bring a previous iteration of Virtua Fighter 5 to the states, that petition encouraged them to work on bring something to the vocal and passionate fanbase of the Virtua Fighter series. Those who are dedicated to the series and have had a chance to play Final Showdown in Japan have apparently been fans of the changes. It remains to be seen what the reception will be like in the States.

As for any news of a completely new game, while there is nothing to report for a possible Virtua Fighter 6, right now they are committed to making VF5 the best it can be. And when asked about the price of this title, all he had to say was that, being a standalone digital title, it will therefore be a competitive price. If you are a fan of hardcore fighting games, look forward to dishing out some money on this standalone title next year.

Ultima 1, 2, and 3 now on GOG.com

by: John Yan
NEWS - I have many, many fond memories playing the original Ultima trilogy. I didn't play as much with 1, but I spent a ton of hours on 2 and 3. I remember how cool it was to be able to wipe out entire towns of folks. 3 had such a unique end character for its day and the introduction of the party in the series led to a few of my friends coming over and playing one of them during combat.

Today, GOG.com has the first 3 Ultima games for $5.99. That's a pretty good deal and you can experience one of the games that help start the RPG craze back in the day. If you're an RPG fan and want to check out an awesome series, then this is it.

Rockin' Android brings Japanese shmups to Steam

Rockin' Android brings Japanese shmups to Steam screenshot

Rockin’ Android announced today that they will begin distributing their top shmups on Steam. The first title available for download on the PC service will be the Gundemonium Collection, a three-pack of popular shoot-’em-up games: Gundemonium Recollection, GundeadliGne, and Hitogata Happa.

The Steam release of these games will include remixed game soundtracks. I've heard a few selections today and I think just about anyone will dig 'em. They've also upgraded GundeadliGne to include online cooperative play support through Steam. Finally, Steam achievements will be included with all three games.

The Gundemonium Collection will be available for download on Steam on September 27, 2011 for $9.99 USD. It will also be possible to purchase the games individually for $3.99 a piece. Rockin’ Android says that they plan to release other titles on Steam at later dates.

We have screenshots from each of the above listed games in our gallery below.

Hands-on with League of Legends: Dominion at PAX

Hands-on with League of Legends: Dominion at PAX screenshot

This year at PAX Prime, Riot Games had its own booth, and what a booth it was. They were showing off the new game mode for League of Legends, "Dominion," on a humongous screen, while shoutcasting matches to all who stopped by to watch. Perhaps a sign of how popular this game is becoming, navigating the area around the booth was quite ridiculous. At some points during the convention, the area around the booth had to be closed off due to blocked traffic.

Luckily, I was able to get some hands-on time with League of Legends: Dominion as part of a 5v5 match along with Dtoid community member Pangloss. While my team didn't win the match -- largely due to me sucking -- I did walk away with an impression of this game and asked seasoned player Pangloss what he thought about it.

League of Legends: Dominion is a completely different experience than the current game and introduces the new map, Crystal Scar. In this map, there are five capture points arranged in a circle that each team must control in order to do damage to the other team's Nexus. Damage can only be done if your team controls more capture points than the other team, and the amount of damage done is tied to the number of points controlled in excess.

When the match starts, every champion on the team has a good amount of gold to start buying items as well as beginning at level three. Because of this, the early laning phase that is crucial in classic League of Legends is practically non-existant. Within a couple of minutes of beginning the match, my Tristana had most of the skills necessary to start skirmishing with the other team's champions.

One thing that I noticed during my time was that this new gameplay mode seemed to invite a different strategy than is prevalent in Summoner's Rift. Late-game play of League of Legends usually encourages teammates to work together as a large group to take out the opposing champions.

However, in "Dominion," if your team sticks together, it makes it difficult to maintain control of all the capture points. In my playtime, our team was called out for sticking with the old strategy which led to us losing the match.

I asked Pangloss what his impression was after we played, and he said that he really enjoyed how this game mode leads straight to small skirmishes between champions. He believed that there are a couple of champions that currently suffer in Summoner's Rift because they have problems farming, but in this new mode, those champions will probably be pretty powerful. Riot Games ensures on their site that all of your favorite champions will be useful and viable in this mode.
