The Daily Hotness: I stand with Mr. North

The Daily Hotness: I stand with Mr. North screenshot

Ok... I won't lie. I kinda procrastinated setting this post up. So I don't have anything clever or cool to show you. But, this past winter I met a corgi. It was amazing. I'd never seen one in person before. It was so hyper and happy and full of positive...ness. It was the greatest thing ever. Now, like Dale, I know the secrets of the Universe.

Love the Corgi. Live the Corgi.

Satoru Iwata announces the Nintendo Network

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - At an investor's meeting Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced a unified online service for the 3DS and Wii U, dubbed the Nintendo Network. The new service will do away with Nintendo's previous console-specific structure and instead allow for multiple user profiles per console, like Xbox Live and PSN. The service will also streamline DLC and make it easier for developers to deliver digital content packages. What's more, Iwata stated that they're exploring the possibility of full retail releases also having a purely digital counterpart through the Network, although he notes that relationships with retailers and storage space are both important factors to consider.

I'm personally happy to hear this news but I also must say it's about time. To put it politely Nintendo's online services--the Wifi Connection, DSiWare, Wii Shop Channel and 3DS Eshop--were pretty fragmented and didn't provide a seamless, unified service to customers. Often it was a hassle to arrange online matches or keep track of your downloaded content, especially if your Wii died and you needed to transfer all your Virtual Console games to a new system.

Nintendo has thankfully realized that going forward they'll need something unilateral across both their home and handheld platforms, something user friendly, fast and straightforward. Hopefully the service will gain the advantages of Live and PSN, but stay free, which would be a huge selling point for the Wii U. I've been waiting for one of the Big Three to do something awesome like Steam on a console without making me pay out the nose for it, and for a while I thought it would be PSN with its Steamworks integration. Maybe Nintendo will beat them to it.

After a generation of messy online services and confusing digital stores, maybe Nintendo has learned from its own mistakes as well as its competitors' and is ready to offer a strong competitor in the online space. I have a healthy skepticism when it comes to Nintendo, but one thing I've learned is that it takes them a while to take stock of their mistakes, and when they fix those mistakes they do it in a big way.

Dead Island's new DLC trailer goes forwards not
backwards

Dead Island's new DLC trailer goes forwards not backwards screenshot

Anyone who was looking forward to Dead Island for a narrative that focuses on the emotional side of the zombie apocalypse probably walked away from Techland's latest effort at least somewhat unfulfilled. But if bludgeoning brain-munchers and delving into the motivations Ryder White sound like your idea of a good time, well then, Deep Silver has something just for you.

The publisher is rolling out a downloadable single player campaign next week with "several hours of story content" where players assume the role of the Dead Island antagonist. The DLC will be available on February 1st for PSN, PC and XBLA and will set you back $9.99 or 800 of Microsoft's moon bucks.

Watch the creation of an Awesomenaut in
real-time...sorta

by: Russell Archey
NEWS - Give a man some coffee, it can raise his productivity.  Give a man too much coffee and...well, check out the video below.  It features an artist for the upcoming Awesomenauts game creating a piece of artwork that'll be featured in the game in less than five minutes in real time.  Pretty impressive stuff, and that's a lot of caffeine.

By the way, according to the press release, depending on what dimension you live in, this may not really be experienced as real time.  Still, awesome nonetheless.

Money printing ahoy: New 2D Mario game coming to
3DS

Money printing ahoy: New 2D Mario game coming to 3DS screenshot

[Painting by Poltergeraldr]

Nintendo posted just posted some series financial losses, but it looks like they're right on track towards getting back in the black. At a recent online conference, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced that thanks to the 3DS's record breaking Q4 2011 sales, the consoles is looking much better in the eyes of 3rd parties, hinting that there are plenty of unannounced big name titles coming to the console.

He didn't get into any more detail than that regarding what 3rd parties are up to, because if he did, that would be a dick move. What would 3rd parties do at E3 this year if Iwata let the cat out of the bag now? Look silly, that's what!

Still, this part of the conference needed a climax, so Iwata took one for the team and announced a new first-party 3DS title: an unnamed 2D Mario game set to release within the next fiscal year (April 2012- March 2013). Seeing as New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii were both two of the best-selling, hardware-moving titles of the past console generation, I think it's safe to say that the 3DS's chance of having a record breaking 2012 just got a whole lot better.

How to run D&D 4E with minimum time investment

I have a background in running and playing (mostly running) tabletop roleplaying games for over twenty years. I consider myself highly skilled in gamemastering. 11 new publishers sign up for EA's Origin (PC)

When Electronic Arts launched their Origin platform last year, it was definitely an interesting development ? but since that time, the platform seems to have stagnated. Sure it?s great if you?re into The Old Republic or any of EA?s ?Play4Free? titles, but if you want to experience anything outside of the EA world, you typically still had to go somewhere else. Lucky for EA, this trend is finally changing.
