Tara was at the Dead Island booth to check out the game and pull aside Doug Macleod of Deep Silver for an interview. She was able to get some interesting info about the game, except for the deodorant bomb. That sounds awesome. But anyway, there's some info in there about different weapon tiers, crafting, trading and selling and Zombie types. Tons of good stuff in there.
Now what's really crazy to me is that this game comes out in almost a week. I can remember from a short time ago when Dead Island was just a screenshot. I'm so glad it finally came around and that it looks fantastic. From what I've seen the mood, setting and gameplay are exactly the kinds of things I can really get into. I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on Dead Island September 6th.

In my research about Contre Jour, I learned that ?contre jour? is actually a french term used to describe a certain type of photograph known for extreme backlighting. It causes the subject in the foreground to appear as an outline of shadow. After reading this, using it as the name of the game suddenly made sense, since Contre Jour uses this throughout to great effect.

PAX just gets bigger and bigger each year. We love the hell out of this show and are amazed just how grander it gets each time. This year there are two whole floors dedicated to gaming, not to mention HaloFest taking up a floor right across the street. And of course there's all the tabletop and free play areas too.
Not only that, but the cosplay keeps getting better too. There weren't too many standouts on Friday, but today's cosplayers were out in full force. We'll have pictures of the cosplayers from today coming at you soon, but check out what we got so far down in the gallery.
*Thanks to community member Joy for taking all of these pictures.

So I think pretty much everyone missed this, but Fruit Ninja Kinect is getting some Halo content soon. At HaloFest, there was one lone Fruit Ninja Kinect kiosk which I originally skipped because, well, it was Fruit Ninja. Don't get me wrong, I love Fruit Ninja. I just didn't understand what it was doing at HaloFest.
Fast forward to the following day and a helpful PR rep for Microsoft pointed out the Halo connection. For starters, every time you slash the screen you'll see two blue lines that represent the Covenant Energy Sword. Not only that, but your reflection in the game is represented like you have Active Camo enabled. Finally, the background has some Halo signage.
So there you go. Fruit Ninja Kinect is getting a Halo-themed DLC pack sometime soon. Cool. Bonus: I caught these two awesome Flood cosplayers playing Fruit Ninja Kinect. I think the giant tentacles gives you an advantage!

Good news for Xbox 360 Castle Crashers fans. The long-promised debut of the Pink Knight has finally become a reality. Along with a slew of other updates and bug fixes, the Pink Knight is now available for download, and its free. Not only that, for the first 50,000 downloads The Behemoth will donate a dollar to the Keep a Breast Foundation.
The Blacksmith Pack is the other DLC up for grabs at 160 MS Points. Updates include Team vs Team in the Player Match Arena and two new avatar items. Check out The Behemoth's blog for all updates. I already liked Castle Crashers, but this makes it even better. Props to the guys over at The Behemoth for not only giving out free DLC but donating to charity as well.

If you're itching for more Star Wars: The Old Republic, look no further. Max Scoville got a chance to play a bit of the game, and gives us his impressions on both PvP and PvE aspects of it. While in PvP he got the chance to wield force powers as a Jedi knight, and then took a look at the smuggler class for PvE.
The general consensus still seems to be that The Old Republic is similar to WoW in a number of ways, though how similar remains to be seen. If this was not Star Wars done by BioWare I would probably be less interested, as it stands I want to at least check it out at some point. I may have to wait until the servers are open for everyone though.

The first thing pretty much everyone notices at this year's PAX Prime are the several dozen massive banner ads for Firefall, a free-to-play MMOFPS/TPS and the first project of Red 5 Studios. Firefall was first announced at last year's PAX Prime and playable earlier this year at PAX East.
I got to play for an hour or so, and I came away feeling like it was a fusion of Unreal Tournmanet 2004 and Borderlands. There are a few different modes, including instanced eSports maps for the competitive folks, as well as a persistent universe that gives players dynamic missions based on what is going on in the game world.

The "campaign" centers on a conflict between humans and an AI-controlled alien faction known as the "Chosen." Periodically, the Chosen will attempt to capture player-controlled cities and outposts by taking out communications and sweeping in with dropships. The players attempt to repel these invasions by protecting generators and antennae, using massive turrets to fight off the Chosen's battleships. If the humans succeed, they are well-rewarded; if the players lose the aliens maintain control of the area and will need to be pushed out eventually.
There are several classes to play and they include a medic, heavy weapons, and sniper. Each class gains skills as they play and upgrade their equipment. For example, when I started playing I had one relatively weak rifle with a one-off ability that allowed me to load up a sticky explosive rounds. Within about 30 minutes, I acquired a rifle that could rapidly fire about a dozen of those sticky rounds. It radically changed my play-style. Instead of hiding out and picking off foes from afar, I could get in close and take out scores of them quite easily. And because all players have jetpacks, anytime I found myself a bit overwhelmed, I could simply fly away.

After logging quite a bit of time in the "MMO" side of Firefall, I hopped into an instanced PvP map. Much like World of Warcarft's battlegrounds, all of your items and equipment from the overworld carry over into PvP. You're also given similar dynamic objectives to accomplish with the rest of your team that reminded me a bit of Team Fortress 2. I had a pretty good time with it, and found myself shouting more than a few obscenities in both excitement and frustration.
Firefall still has a few months to go before it launches this winter, but what I saw was really tight. The game itself is gorgeous, and everything just felt smooth. The learning curve is very generous, and I was able to pick it up quickly, coming away from it with a really solid understanding of a lot of the basic mechanics.
There's a lot of talent behind this project, including the project lead for World of Warcraft, so it's a safe bet to keep this one on your radar.
