So, what's on the Gears 2 bonus disc

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

When the BBFC isn't busy keeping cool, violent games away from kids with totally square parents, they like to leak out the occasional news tidbit, just so all the game journalists think they're "hip." It's actually a little sad, but it's hard to argue with the benefits, like learning the content on the Gears of War 2 bonus disc that comes with the Limited Edition of the game.

Now, because there you may want to go into the experience completely pure, we've put the list after the break. But the awesome rebels among you should waste no time in clicking below.

Next Far Cry Could Be In Africa (Again) [Ubisoft]

Ubisoft's Patrick Redding, Far Cry 2's narrative designer, confirms that the next Far Cry game will take place in Africa — just like Far Cry 2! Keep in mind that the team is still in the "preliminary stages", but does have a "commitment to the African setting." Redding says:

For us Africa still has a huge amount of promise... There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it?s safe to say we?ll continue to explore it... That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we?re still at the preliminary stages.

If we wanted to make the next game set in the? forest of South America, we could do it.

But I think to save time, for us, one of the reasons we chose to use the African setting is because we felt that in order to retain the Far Cry brand value, of an exotic, dangerous environment, a place that maybe people haven?t had a chance to see themselves, or have seen extensively in film, television and other games, we wanted to choose Africa.

Let?s face it, jungle islands are probably less exciting as they were four years ago.

But a slowly melting Antarctica? Man, sign me up for that game.

Third Far Cry game confirmed, dev team has ?commitment to the African setting? [VG247]

15 months in jail for porn and videogames

15 months in jail for porn and videogames screenshot

A Bristol man has won himself fifteen months of prison for a stockpile of pirated videogames, movies and delicious pornography. 51-year-old Gary Boulter of Thornbury was found guilty of running a copying "factory" in his home.

Trading standards received a tip-off about Boulter's activities, and he has admitted to possessing illegal media worth more than £50,000 in total. He has been found guilty of 23 offenses committed from a room in his house that was given over to the copying of the material, which he then sold to his friends.

Boulter claims that the copying of games and movies was a "hobby" and that he never charged for his dodgy discs. With 2,300 game and film copies in his house, along with 500 blank DVD-Rs, that's quite the expensive non-profit hobby. Should have stuck to Warhammer

In other news, if anybody wants some cheap copies of Spunks-A-Lordy II: The Slaggiest Muff Festival in Croydon, I can sort you out.

Microsoft made out like a bandit on the Immersion
rumble debacle

Microsoft made out like a bandit on the Immersion rumble debacle screenshot

There's a lot of legal babble here, but I'll try to break it down:

Back in 2003, Immersion sued both Microsoft and Sony for the use of rumble in their controllers, as they originally held the patent for the technology. From this lawsuit, Microsoft was ordered to pay Immersion $26 million. Ouch.

However, being the sly bastards that they are, MS included a clause that required Immersion to pay them a portion of any money obtained from Sony as part of additional litigation.

Later, Sony was ordered to pay Immersion $90 million over the suit. Double Ouch. Microsoft was not paid per that earlier agreement, so they sued Immersion.

Finally, Immersion settled out by paying 20.75 million to Microsoft.

The end result? Microsoft made out like a bandit, paying in a little over $5 million for the use of rumble in their controllers. Poor Sony has to pay so much more.

Gothic Lolita Shooter Death Smiles Getting Xbox
360 Version [Only In Japan]

Shooter specialty developer Cave is bringing its Gothic Lolita arcade shmup Death Smiles to the Xbox 360. The game is a scrolling horizontal shooter — something of a rarity for developer Cave. While not as insane as other Cave offerings, the game does put a nice spin on the horizontal shooter by having players shooting objects that are coming in from the right and the left. Cave is currently 60 percent finished with development of the Xbox 360 version, and the game is slated for a Spring 2009 release in Japan.

Thanks for the tip, Weils!

GameStop Won't Have PSN Cards Until 2009 [Rumor]

There's been no fanfare or official announcement from Sony, but there are PlayStation Network pre-paid cards out there. For sale, to the public. And have been for months. So long as you've got a Meijer near your place, that is. If you don't, and are waiting for something a little more widespread - like GameStop, for example - you may be waiting for a while. If this email (courtesy of a GameStop employee) is legit, it looks like the nation's largest specialist gaming retailer isn't yet equipped to activate the cards. They were supposed to be, but they're not. They will be in 2009. Just in case, you know. It was keeping you up at night.

Joystiq interview: LittleBigPlanet's Pete Smith
and Jim Unwin

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Action

The LittleBigPlanet breakdown session was a little different than most. We've been seeing the game at every trade show since it was revealed at GDC 2007. As a result, the session took a more informal Q&A approach, rather than a showcase for the game's features.

Those present - producer Pete Smith and interface designer Jim Unwin - did start off by volunteering some information: Firstly, the game is finished and pretty much ready to go. The European release date has been finalized as October 29th, with other regions to be confirmed later. Barring unforeseen circumstances there's no reason at all why this game shouldn't ship in time.

We were also told that when LittleBigPlanet was first shown at GDC, Media Molecule had only about five members. As much as the presentation at GDC was a glimpse into the PS3's future, it was also a hiring pitch. Media Molecule was looking for new members in order to work on this incredibly ambitious project. The level shown at GDC was the entirety of LittleBigPlanet up until that point. In fact, they hadn't even finalized the name until a few days before.
