Legendary can't promise that you'll remember the
titans

by: Randy Kalista
NEWS - This behind the scenes look at Legendary's rather humdrum titan class creatures is -- while a decently put together video -- still just a look at Legendary's rather humdrum titan class creatures.  Sorry for the redundancy.  I thought maybe saying it twice would make these creature designs feel more exciting.  The fact that there's apparently more than one of these lazily-designed enemies doesn't really up the ante.  The big huge tentacoo creature is cool, only by virtue of the fact that it's hard to go wrong with those in the end.  Still, it can't be a good thing when you're stifling a yawn while looking at big huge city-wrecking anomalies.

Magi-Nation expands borders, expands PvP

by: Randy Kalista
NEWS - Since having gone live in April, the Magi-Nation: Battle for the Moonlands free-to-play web-based MMO has just released its first major content update, effectively doubling the game's area with seven new landscapes, and adding new in-game chat functionality.  Further, they've expanded PvP by incorporating leader boards, and they've added more than 30 new items to the in-game shops.  Magi-Nation operates on micro-transactions, perfect for the allowance-fed billfolds of 8 to 14-year-olds, the game's target audience.Comment

Capcom fights lag for Street Fighter IV online

Capcom fights lag for Street Fighter IV online screenshot

Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono has been talking about the problems facing Street Fighter IV's development and has admitted that lag during online bouts is a "huge problem" for the game. He stated quite openly that creating the new Street Fighter is a difficult process, but said his team is working on the potential problems.

"Obviously lag will be a huge problem for online play. We're working on it. It's quite difficult for 3D Street Fighter at the moment," explained Ono. "In order to prevent the lag we're thinking about trying to balance it up at [the] user interface level and input timing. We still haven't got a complete plan as yet. We're still working on it. That's all we can say at the moment."

I'm no one-on-one fighting game fan, but I'm tempted to try and master the art for this game, which is looking terrific, even if Chun Li looks like a post-op transsexual. Still, even without considerable lag, the fighting game freaks will complain that the online ruins the game because they can't accurately predict attacks that they've spent eight months studying the framerates of. God, those people make me sick.

Sony Dishes The PSN Pre-Paid Card Release Info
[Playstation Network]

So those PSN pre-paid cards aren't hitting GameStop until 2009? Screw GameStop. Sony have announced that, in addition to the stores currently stocking the cards (Pamida, Meijer and Speedway), come September three more chains will be selling them. Those three are Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and Riteaid. Which is all well and good, but I'm getting the feeling there are people outside the US - like me, for example - more interested in these cards than Americans. Mostly because it'll make buying stuff like Rock Band DLC that much easier.

Star Wars Galaxies trading card game launched
today

by: Randy Kalista
NEWS - Star Wars Galaxies is going 2-D and will now move to a trading card game format featuring starter decks and 15-card booster packs.  That statement is actually only half true.  SWG did indeed release a new electronic trading card game today, "Champions of the Force."  And you can play it in and out of game.  You can even try it out using SWG's 14-day trial, though current subscribers will be given -- free of charge with their regular subscription:

The random nature of trading card games can be rather off-putting.  Especially when you open up a fresh pack only to find that these are not the droids you are looking for.Comment

People not called Denis Dyack talk about Denis
Dyack

People not called Denis Dyack talk about Denis Dyack screenshot

Denis Dyack has done a good job of making himself more talked about than his videogame, and as a result has become a figure of fun and contempt in recent weeks. MTV Multiplayer requested an interview with Silicon Knights staff who were not Dyack for a change, although the first story to come from this interview are Stephen Totilo's three interview subjects talking about ... Denis Dyack.

Carman Dix, Art director of Too Human:
Underneath, Denis is still that boy that genuinely loves video games with a passion.

Henry Sterchi, Director of design of Too Human:
Denis is sincerely passionate about the quality of everything Silicon Knights does, and with that passion comes some of his outspokenness and desire to interact with the community. One of my favorite Denis stories is when we met to discuss Eternal Darkness when I was working at Nintendo. A few of us got together, went out for dinner, and then ended up at an arcade just playing games for hours while we talked about ideas. It was incredibly refreshing and exciting to see all of the passion he had about making games and still act like a gamer and have fun.

Steve Henifin, Audio director of Too Human:
One of the things I like about Denis is that he is a tenacious person and he takes risks. I respect him for that, because I’m the same way. I never give up, and if you don’t take risks you are never going to know your potential. I know that if it were not for Denis we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now, because SK wouldn’t exist.

Even when Will Wright and Hideo Kojima, two men who have truly earned their iconic status, release a videogame, we still talk about the game more than its creators. We know Will Wright is making Spore and we know Kojima made MGS, but we can talk about those games without the smug faces of their creators predominantly at the forefront of our minds. Denis Dyack, on the other hand, has made sure that he gets more coverage than his videogame. Perhaps he felt that he would promote the game in this way, but as I can see, he has only promoted himself. People wonder why I criticize Dyack so much, it's bullsh*t like that. Denis Dyack is pretty much Jade Raymond at this point, except it wasn't quite Raymond's fault that she was shamelessly made more famous than her game, and she's a bit more attractive.

3D Realms: 'Several hours' of Duke Nukem Forever
sort of done

Filed under: PC, First Person Shooters

Is that the sound of Satan sharpening his skates? According to a new interview with Team Xbox, 3D Realms boss George Broussard implies that - dare we say? - development of Duke Nukem Forever is going along swimmingly. You know, just like it has been since ... 1998.

All most kidding aside, Broussard tells the site that the developer has "several hours of fairly polished game to play," and that, "It's fun, it's in focus, we know what bits are fun and which are not, and it's just a matter of time now." But clearly, time moves a little slower in 3D Realms', er ... realm. Given that the company has already denied reports that it's coming this year, we'll have to make due with Duke Nuken 3D on XBLA "sometime in September." Of 2008. Really. Promise.
