No one doubted it would happen, but we do have confirmation from Nikkei that all of Nintendo's initial shipment of 400,000 3DS game systems have sold. One day. Gone just like that.
We called this launch day the most uneventful launch day ever. It was like that because just about all of the initial shipment was spoken for in pre-orders from over a month ago. And those pre-orders were snatched up in only a day. Stores didn't even see walk-in traffic.
There were a few places you could line up to buy a system without a pre-order, but those were very rare. One of the largest was Akihabara's massive monolith of electronics, Yodobashi Camera. As seen above, in a picture by Famitsu, hundreds waited outside, with walk-in traffic waiting alongside pre-order customers. In the end, 1,000 walk-in customers went home happy. This really was an isolated case, as all of the other stores we visited were strictly pre-order only traffic.
Nintendo is still planning on shipping out more to bring Japan to a total of 1.5 million systems by the end of March. Word is that some shops have opened up pre-orders again. This is probably going to go on for some time, knowing Japan.

The Augmented Reality functionality of the 3DS was kind of lost on me until I unlocked it in Nintendogs + Cats. Now I'm able to make my almost-real tri-colored Pembroke Welsh Corgi appear in my environment. And with the added bonus of 3D, he's almost-really real.
In the gallery below you'll see the hilarious results of combining Nintendogs + Cats and the various AR cards included with the 3DS. Most of these give your puppy a costume to wear. I posed him around my apartment. My favorite is my corgi standing proudly over my pile of dirty dishes. Although wall-climbing Pikmin Corgi is also quite wonderful.
I wonder where his ears went.

The Bit.Trip series came to a close on Friday with the release of Bit.Trip FLUX in Europe. I'm sad to see to the series come to an end, but I'm also excited to see what Gaijin Games and their subsidiary Robotube games will come up with next.
Maybe this collection of Bit.Trip concept art will give us some clues as to what their next project could be, like the very different version of Bit.Trip FATE seen above. It looks like in the original version of the game, it's central gameplay hook, "the Fate line", is totally missing. Instead you get a 2-player co-op shmup featuring two characters named "Parasite" and "Dominator". As much as I love Bit.Trip FATE, I think I love the idea of this early version of FATE just as much. If this game every does come out, I totally have dibs on Dominator.
More concept art from the Bit.Trip series can be found at the link below. Some of them are new, some of them are old, but they're all suitable for framing.

Last month, Activision officially closed Bizarre Creations. The UK-based studio was best known for its pedigree of racing titles, including Metropolis Street Racer, the Xbox exclusive Project Gotham Racing series, which spawned the unlockable Geometry Wars arcade game into its own franchise, and Blur (360/PS3). Yesterday, [...]

Through the magic of Augmented Reality you can make your 3DS Mii walk around your IRL environment. The pre-installed feature (I wouldn't call it a game) lets you move your Mii around, pose it and then take a 3D picture of it. This is fun for about two minutes total. Add in the Nintendo character cards, which have the same functionality, and my figures come out to about 12 total minutes of fun with the included software and cards.
Nah, I'm being too hard on it. This AR Mii stuff is pretty neat, and it's definitely good for showing off what your shiny new 3DS can do. Now let's see if I can get in on this naughty Peach positioning thing that everyone's into.
