The ludicrously contrived controversy over Call of Juarez: The Cartel continues with news that some Mexican legislators want the game banned. Again, it's worth pointing out that all we've seen so far is some box art. That's enough for some government officials, apparently.
On both sides of the border, there has been a lot of controversy (and a jaw-dropping amount of presumption) surrounding the freshly released game. Legislators in the state of Chihuahua are said to be lobbying the Secretariat of Governance and the Secretariat of Economy to block sales of the game.
"Lots of kids say they want to be a hitman, because they are the ones that get away with everything," declared youth worker Laurencio Barraza. "This glorifies violence, as if victims were just another number or another bonus."
It's amazing how quickly we can go from a simple announcement to outright hysteria when it comes to videogames. There doesn't seem to be any other medium that goes from zero to ten overnight, but based on a sheer name alone, this seems to be the case with games.

I've just now gotten into Retro's Donkey Kong Country Returns, and so far, I agree with everything Chad Concelmo said in his review. It's awesome. Playing the game has me desperate to see Retro return to the Metroid series. The brilliant level design, the ingeniously placed hidden areas, the need to use your multiple abilities to fully explore levels, and the plentiful forms of new and fascinating wildlife all make Donkey Kong Country Returns a classic, and I'd love Retro use those same element to create a new 2D, home console Metroid game.
This concept art for Retro's Metroid Prime only has me more excited about the idea. From the looks of it, the game originally called for a battle against a six armed ice baboon, and a slightly smaller, spikier version of Kraid from Super Metroid. Can you picture those battles in a new Metroid game that has the graphic fidelity of Metroid Prime, the camera angle of Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the gameplay of Super Metroid?
I think that would be enough to get the haters to forget about Other M, but what do you think? Would you be down for seeing this concept art come to life in a 2D Metroid title?

She's not jumping over zombie dogs and summoning Tyrants like she did in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, but Marvel Vs Capcom 3's Jill still looks like a hell of a lot of fun to play. This footage is reportedly from the incomplete Jill found on the PS3 version of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3's on-disc code, so we can presume that what we see here is only a glimpse of the full version of the character. Maybe her Tyrant super will make its way into the game after all?
Perhaps more importantly, maybe this leak will motivate Capcom to try a little harder to keep its character reveals under wraps. I can't remember the last time I was truly surprised by one of Capcom's character announcements. It seems like it's always beaten to the punch, either by achievement lists, website code, GameStop listings, or some other Matlock-able source.
Or maybe that's all part of the company's marketing scheme. Leaked footage has a dangerous allure that you just don't get from press releases. Maybe Capcom has learned to work that allure into something that works.

Add to myYahoo!I've always been fond of Gottlieb's classic arcade game, Q*Bert. But I had forgotten how much effort was invested in trying to launch the little orange hosenose into the Pac-Man category back in the day.
This article from the November 1983 issue of Electronic Games magazine shows off a whole bunch of now-forgotten official Q*Bert merchandise (click to enlarge):
Pencil toppers, vinyl Kenner miniatures, console and tabletop and board game versions, plush toys, wind-ups, tote bags... there was a lot of licensed product in stores for Christmas 1983. But Q*Bert was always more of a hardcore game -- the difficulty ramped up quickly, and while the character design was cute enough, his tendency toward unintelligible cartoon profanity made him slightly risque at the time. While the character survived well into the 1990s with versions for the NES and the Playstation, he was never quite as accessible as Namco's friendly, hungry little yellow guy.
Still, I'd love to have one of those plushies. @!#?@! indeed.
