In Japan Sega has arcade date games. In these you'll sit with your date in a two-seater, usually in some kind of closed off, private booth. In this booth you'll both control a simple game, which is usually a light gun game. There's key moments to scare the girl so she'll jump into your lap. You get a few laughs, a bit of entertainment and maybe a bit of cuddling for your 500 yen. Not bad.
At AOU 2011 I tried out Sega's latest in this arcade date game line, Let's Go Island 3D. This one's pretty crazy, and a bit more comedic than other's I've tried, like their popular House of the Dead games. In this game you play as an American white couple on vacation on a lovely tropical island. After arriving things immediately go south and you end up going on an insane adventure on and under water, in an on-rails lightgun game. You control watercraft and are armed with guns (harpoons?) and you'll use them to do right. You'll also yell out things that only an American white couple would yell. "Oh no! Yikes!" Japanese players got a kick out of these voicings.
There's a few things that make this one notable. First off, it features glasses-free 3D. It looks really great, but if you're not feeling it, there's a button outside the booth that lets you switch the game to flat 2D. There's hidden air jets that shoot out bursts of air into your face to surprise you. In once scene, while underwater, I came across a dolphin caught in a net (oh no, Chad!). You have to button mash to release it before a giant octopus comes along to eat it. If you don't make it in time, the octopus hits you with a giant tentacle. As it swings at you in awesome 3D, the jets blow air in your face to startle you.
The only other notable thing about Let's Go Island 3D is how funny it is. That carries over even to the cabinet design, which you'll see in our gallery below. I may have not been on a date, but this game was still a lot of fun.

Taito's arcade sequel, Music GunGun 2, again mixes music/rhythm gaming with light gun shooting. Take popular music and add a light gun to shoot notes to the beat and you've got the right idea.
After waiting in an insanely long line at AOU 2011 yesterday, I got a chance to play. I was cocky and told the attendant that I would not be needed the tutorial mode. I picked a hard song on a hard level and got a "D" grade score. I heard those behind me in line snickering. I later came back and got a "B" on an easier song, but it was too late by then. None of those that saw my original failing were there to see this redemption.
As you can see in the video above, you're in a boss battle of sorts, and you'll work alone or with a partner (400 yen for 2P!) to shoot out bad music notes to the beat. A hoop around the notes lights up to give players a feeling for the beat. A full rotation indicates a full beat, and that's when you should shoot. It you play two-player, both players will trade off rhythms. In the harder modes, you'll have to shoot 16th notes and fire and drag notes in perfect time. It gets pretty insane, as you'll see at the end of the above video.
There's going to be about 100 songs total when GunGun 2 hits arcades. Within the offerings I saw, there's game music (Super Mario Bros. Theme included), original songs, anime, J-pop, classical and "kids." Of course, some of the most popular offerings were listed under the Hatsune Miku.

Yes, there were other games at Japan's 2011 AOU Amusement Expo yesterday, but it seems like the only ones attendees wanted to play were Love Plus branded. Konami showed off their two newest Love Plus arcade titles there. Fans showed up in droves, DS in hand, to see their virtual girlfriend up close and maybe take her picture. Or get their picture taken with her.
Love Plus Arcade Colorful Clip isn't a game as much as it is a kiosk for a virtual date. The whole point is to get your virtual girl to do cute things and then take pictures of her being cute. Your shot is actually printed out at the end of the "date" for you to keep. There was an overwhelming number of example photographs at Konami's booth, and you'll see some of them in our gallery below. They even displayed upcoming photo albums that you can keep your Colorful Clip photos in. I got a kick out of watching attendees getting very excited over some of the snapshots on display.
If Colorful Clip isn't much of a game, then Love Plus Medal Happy Daily Life is a game at all. Still, that didn't stop droves of fans from lining up for the experience, as you'll see in the video above. This medal redemption machine let fans see what their virtual girlfriend looks like outside of the DS screen. The sync'd up game girl turns (kind of) real through something that looks like a hologram. A big attraction at the booth was a life-sized version of the girlfriends. Many gamers stopped to pose next to their girl, as you'll see. Some that posed looked a bit embarrassed, but the experience was definitely the hit of the show.

On Monday, the Destructoid Show will have a very special episode. It's going to be a lot of fun, and several Destructoid editors have piled in to help. I decided to mark the occasion by busting out my little known poetry skills. Here's a poem for Ekans.
The Dtoid Show will hit, as always, on Monday!
