I'm going to pretend that you didn't just see the word Minecraft and boot the game up, knowing full well what I am about to write.

Indeed, version 1.5 is live. Quite the day for this release to fall on, what with Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 both being as excellent as they are. Minecraft now does weather effects, achievements, statistics (don't look at these, unless you want to feel tremendous amounts of shame), and more.

The achievements are limited right now, with more on the way, but they currently seem like a great guiding force for players who haven't bothered to learn crafting. Also, now that there are storms, pigs can be struck by lighting. In a totally metal twist, this occurrence results in them morphing into zombie pigmen.

In a mere two days, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP will be able to fit in your pocket. It's coming to iPhone and iPod Touch as a $2.99 download; alternatively, you can grab the $4.99 iPad version which is out now and will become universal (playable on iPhone) on Thursday.

The consensus among iPad owners is mostly that of eff yeahs, while iPhone owners have been waiting patiently. Then there are the rest of us, who are holed up in our showers, using the rushing water to mask our manly sobbing.

Doom 4 won't be a 're-skinned' Rage, says id screenshot

Rage continues to look terrific, and also continues to be id's main focus, at least in terms of where the studio's marketing muscle is at. Following a few brief statements about Doom 4, which pin it as not a direct sequel to Doom 3 but not a series reboot either, Eurogamer has gotten new info.

id's design director Matt Hooper says the team on Doom 4 is going in its "own direction. They're doing something Doom fans will be happy with. We're separated enough to be able to go our own ways, but still connected where we can help facilitate both those directions."

Continuing, Hooper explains that the game "is distinct enough. It would be dangerous ... We don't want to make a re-skinned Doom [with Rage] and then Doom 4 be a re-skinned Rage. That would be bad."

"It's worked out really nicely where we have enough connection to take advantage of things like technology and talent, but enough separation to be able to go in a unique direction."

World of Tanks now taking the American and
European fronts

NEWS - Tank combat is something of a niche genre in the realm of RTS but it certainly has a dedicated fanbase. Wargaming.net knows this and their session-based RTS MMO, World of Tanks, is now live in both Europe and the States. Already breaking records in Russia, the WW2 tank MMO made quite an impact during beta testing in other regions. Best of all, it's free to play. Of course there will be microtransactions but that's the kind of distribution model I like: make customers happy enough with your free game to invest in it later. It worked for games back in the early 90s and I'm surprised it's only showing up again recently in the FTP MMO arena.

As some of you will surely know, Valve's alternate-reality game for Portal 2 ended with the game unlocking on Steam last night. Without getting into too much detail, there were a lot of people who felt entitled and ended up getting their feelings hurt.

I personally found it to be a compelling way to spend the weekend playing new ARG-centric downloadable content and games I hadn't gotten into before, so it's hard to complain too much. Then again, I wasn't necessarily counting the seconds to Portal 2's release, either.

The final phase of the ARG had players logging in game time for the 13 Potato Sack titles, and this process was eventually expedited thanks to all of the in-game potatoes users had collected. Some of these potatoes were incredibly difficult to obtain, but those who got all 36 were given a special prize by Valve.

In addition to getting slightly earlier access to Portal 2, these guys and gals were awarded the Valve Complete Pack. Jonathan Ross and I were both mad enough to accomplish this feat. And, for those wondering, only Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One are giftable to friends. Glory lasts forever!
