Even in this day of remakes, rehashes and rereleases, there's a few classic RPGs that will make us give that silent approval nod. The rare few that will make us buy another re-release no matter what. Sony hits us with two of them this week: Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger.
Holy Mother of Downloadable Games.
I can't promise that I'll complete either one of these games, but I'm sure as sh*t buying them on PSN this week. They'll live on my PS3 game list as well as my PSP's memory card. I'm sure they'll have a home on my Vita, too. Just knowing I can touch/click on an icon and boot up two of the finest games ever made is pretty nice. We're so spoiled these days.

The next time someone tries telling you that videogames are a waste of time be sure to bring up Foldit, a game that gives players the chance to play with proteins by trying to fold them, and how it was used to solve a problem scientists have been working on for over a decade. Oh and the problem dealt with understanding an enzyme that will help lead to a cure for diseases like AIDS.
Despite the fact that putting the enzyme on Foldit was a last resort (scientists even tried using a special protein-folding program to solve this) it took members of the Foldit Contenders Group less than ten days to find a solution to this puzzle. This may be one of the coolest things I have ever read, and just goes to prove that videogames are good for more than just goofing around for a few hours. Of course, we already knew that, didn't we?

The 3DS has had tough year in the gaming press it seemed like you couldn't go a month without being the focal point of some gaming community calamity. One of the bigget bombsells to hit the console its owners was the cancelation of Mega Man Legends 3. Much like Duke Nukem Forever, some fans had been waiting for the game for nearly half their lives. Unlike Duke Nukem Forever, the gaming press seemed to actually enjoy Mega Man Legends 3. Chris Hoffman of Nintendo Power played the prototype version of the game, and he really enjoyed it.
For that reason and many more, fans are still rallying to get Capcom to finish the game, or at least release the already completed Mega Man Legends 3 prototype on the 3DS eShop. On top of that, ex-Capcom head of R&D Keiji Inafune asked Capcom if he could help keep the project going, but they turned him down. It seems the bad PR for the company just wont die.
Personally, I love it when fans work in creative ways to get their voices heard, up until the point I hear the word "boycott". Expressing your love of videogames by refusing to buy the games that you want to play, thinking that it will teach game developers/publishers a lesson, is a terrible idea. The only lesson thing that teaches developers/publishers is to make even fewer games for the fans in question. If hundreds of thousands of fans decide to boycott Resident Evil Revelations because they didn't get Mega Man Legends 3 on the 3DS, not only will that make the revival of Legends 3 all the less likely, but it will also tell Capcom that old school-style Resident Evil games don't sell either, and/or that the 3DS isn't worth developing for.
If you want to show Capcom that you're serious about buying their games, not buying their games is probably the worst way to do that, right?

The tension between phone gaming and handheld systems has been pretty thick as of late. Many would argue that the rise of phone gaming - in large part to iOS - has played a major role in the decline of dedicated gaming handhelds. To a certain degree that's an accurate statement, though I think the "decline of dedicated handhelds" is exaggerated just a little. Regardless, it's a bit silly to think that these two gaming platforms can't coexist; Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune shares that sentiment.
In an interview with Joystiq's Ben Gilbert, Inafune compared the two to cell phone cameras and dedicated cameras stating that "You don't use a Smartphone camera for an interview, and you don't use a really professional camera to take some small pictures when you're going to work." The difference in quality and function is quite clear.
He goes on to say that "If you want to play a good game, you get a PS3 or Xbox or that kind of thing. You don't stay on your iPhone or on a Smartphone game for three or five hours, nobody would do that." Based on my own gaming habits, that's an undeniably true statement. There's no reason for those two sectors of the industry to be at odds because, theoretically, they're relegated to very different gaming experiences.
Though it's not an altogether new angle, Inafune makes a solid argument. His desire is for a future where games are developed to suit their audiences. Phone games don't need to, and shouldn't be aiming to deliver console-caliber experiences. Likewise, console games don't need to take the dollar menu approach we see on phones.
The issue, it seems, is that there's a pressure on both platforms to become more than is required of them. Gaming hardware manufacturers are eager to drive sales by reaching this phone-toting market, and phone manufacturers know there's a legion of gamers craving accessible portable gaming. While I would love to see a gaming market where both dedicated hardware and phones can succeed in tandem, this increased requirement for a "successful" platform maybe inhibiting that future.
Regardless, it's a noble desire and, as one who is currently developing games for smartphones, Inafune is well on his way to making an impact in that space.
