L.A. Noire causing PS3s with latest Firmware to
overheat

L.A. Noire causing PS3s with latest Firmware to overheat? screenshot

It seems poor Sony just cannot catch a break. The critically acclaimed PS3 Firmware 3.61 may be the cause of Sony consoles overheating when trying to play L.A. Noire. That is, if Rockstar's customer support warning is true.

"We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models," said the company. "Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or "Red Lighting" after having installed 3.61."

Rockstar says that Sony has been notified of the issue, and that it is continuing to test L.A. Noire on different PS3 SKUs and different Firmware versions to see what's up.

The support page we were linked to regarding this issue has since been deleted, and we have contacted Rockstar directly to see if they can comment further. We'll provide an update if and when one arrives.

[Thanks, Cowboy]

Operation Flashpoint Red River: Jose Soto's bio

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - I really like the character bios Codemasters is doing for Operation Flashpoint Red River. This time we see a day in the life of Corporal Jose Soto, Fireteam Bravo's sniper. As you'd expect Soto has a very cool and professional personality and the insights he gives into his line of work are kind of fascinating. His body is always calm but his mind is active, and he's just enough on edge to keep his senses sharp for the enemy snipers hunting for him. His personality kind of reminds me of my brother...but that's probably because he's been head-shotting me from 100 yards ever since GoldenEye 64.

BlazBlue developer isn't fond of touch-screen
attacks

BlazBlue developer isn't fond of touch-screen attacks screenshot

In a chat with Official Nintendo Magazine, Arc System Works' Toshimichi Mori made a jab at Capcom for mapping attacks in Super Street Fighter IV 3D to the touch screen for easy access.

"Super Street Fighter IV 3D has easy special move buttons. As hardcore fighting fans we don't think that's right, so we chose to display a list of combos [for BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II] instead of easy attack buttons."

Touch-screen attacks are a matter of accessibility, which is exactly what BlazBlue's list of combos is about as well. I can't see how either design philosophy is right or wrong -- they both exist, and that's okay. But if you want to argue about it, that's cool.

Help name hundreds of characters in Dragon's
Dogma

Help name hundreds of characters in Dragon's Dogma screenshot

Seriously! Dragon's Dogma producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi took to Capcom-Unity to ask for your hand in naming the in-game allies, The Pawns. They are looking for 300 names across three distinct categories:

  • Modern name (e.g. Michael, Mike, Ben, etc.)
  • Dragon's Dogma world reflected name (e.g. Adaro, Aelinore, etc.)
  • Pet names (e.g. Coco, Pooch, etc.)

Follow that first link to see how you can submit your ingenious character name. The contest is open until May 29, so you can take your time with this one. On an unrelated note, I'm so calling my next pet Coco. As in, the comedian -- not Ice-T's special lady.

Nano Panda Review (iPhone, iPad)

Gamezebo Rating: 50

When it comes to your average iPhone puzzler, the concept of teamwork is a rather alien one. Such is the size of the device at hand, that the idea of working with someone else to complete a challenge never really enters the phone's vocabulary. Nano Panda might be yet another one man affair, but it does have teamwork at its heart. Problem is, it's a less an example of a problem shared being a problem halved, and more a case of double trouble.
