NEWS - Yeah, you read that right and that was my exact reaction when I first read the news. VG247 is reporting that a tweet on the lead writer for the project leaked the news that Jamie Foxx has been cast as Lynch in the movie adaptation of Kane & Lynch. Lead writer Kyle Ward has posted on his account the following, "done deal... Jamie Foxx is in." Does this make any sense to anyone out there? I understand power casting a role, but I am not exactly sure what if any similarities can be found in Jamie Foxx and Lynch. They do realize that Lynch was portrayed as a psychotic hillbilly, more or less... right? This just doesn't add up to me...

Rumors are swirling about an upcoming fresh Xbox 360 redesign -- a slimmer, perhaps more portable iteration -- but don't bother asking GameStop brass Dan DeMatteo about it. He knows as much as we do -- which is to say, nothing but rumors from suspect sources.
"And we have nothing in our financial plans for anything different -- either price change or new upgrade -- of either the PS3 or 360," DeMatteo-san told listeners of GameStop's Q4 earnings call, after shutting the door in the same manner on the Wii HD. "I wouldn't be surprised if their total focus was on the new motion-detection devices, etcetera."
From the Wii HD to a new Xbox 360, we're in "[We] don't comment on rumors and speculation" territory. We'll just have move along for now (and hope our HDDs can make the transition if Microsoft does indeed have new hardware up their sleeves).

Add to myYahoo!Book-inspired games have never been common, and action-oriented adaptations even rarer. One such title was Leo Christopherson's Klendathu, published by Radio Shack for the TRS-80 Color Computer back in 1982, based on Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel Starship Troopers.
Christopherson established a reputation for impressive animation on the TRS-80 Model I, where his artwork and sound design brought personality and life to games like Android NIM and Dancing Demon. This was his only published game for the CoCo, and while he took advantage of the color capabilities and square(ish) pixels of the new platform, his work here isn't spectacular. The burning flames look quite nice, and the bugs' walking feet are properly anchored to the ground, but there just isn't much else to look at. The soundtrack is also weak compared to his Model I efforts -- it consists of simple pops and beeps, with nary a hint of a keening alien insect or crackling flame.
The action is based on the alien bug battles central to Heinlein's novel, but there are some tactical aspects to the gameplay as well. The player must monitor the grid for bug activity and drop in where the battle rages hottest, switching zones rapidly to keep up with the insects. There are no fixed "waves," just a constant onslaught that requires the player to keep on top of the developing situation:
Once in the heat of battle, the player has a small flamethrower with which to ignite as many bugs as possible, using the CoCo's analog stick mouse-style to aim and the fire button to turn on the heat. There's a bit of Missile Command strategy available here, as a burning bug will occasionally ignite its neighbor, but for the most part the player's focus has to be on hitting each of the bugs with a shot of flame as quickly as possible:
There are some higher-level strategic concerns as well. The player must manage limited fire resources, and keep a close eye on the clock and the attacking bugs' impact on the player's protective suit. Get worn down by the bugs, or lose track of time and fail to return to the drop ship, and it's game over (incidentally, I recall this screen as the first time I'd encountered the phrase "bought the farm" as a jokey euphemism for death):
There isn't much more to the game than that -- fight the bugs, fight some other bugs, earn money, gain rank, and repeat. There are two difficulty levels and 5 game lengths to choose from, but the gameplay is essentially the same in all modes.
Klendathu's design is simple and light on story detail, and the audiovisuals aren't nearly as atmospheric as one would like them to be, but the constant pressure to leap out of any given battle and see how the war is going overall provides a realistic touch. It was a unique CoCo-exclusive game, a fresh experience in its day, and I enjoyed playing it enough to seek out and read Heinlein's novel a few years later.

NEWS - Capcom has finally put a solid date and price on the upcoming Final Fight: Double Impact. The downloadable title, which includes both Final Fight and Magic Sword in their original arcade forms, will be released on the Xbox Live Arcade on April 14 for 800 MS points. The PlayStation Network will receive the title a day later, April 15, for $9.99. Both titles are amongst the best Capcom has ever released in the arcades. I have spent countless numbers of quarters on both games over the years. The title will include both local and online play, including "seamless" drop-in and drop-out play for online players.

Add to myYahoo!I didn't play Red Steel. Early reviews of the title did not bode well for it and, frankly, I was already (foolishly) spending a lot of money on Wii launch day. So, if there's any sort of context required to understand the above video, I don't know what it is.
What I do know is that the game is visually appealing for something which appears on Nintendo's console. This trailer shows off enemies that you'll face in Red Steel 2, with a couple enemy types and some bosses revealed. If the MotionPlus functionality works as advertised, it could be a good bit of fun.
I'm still shrugging, though. I know very little about the world Red Steel takes place in as a series and nothing I've seen here is encouraging me to seek more information. Maybe one of you can tell me what I'm missing out on. Convince me, people!
