Save on The Witcher 2 and Dawn of War this
weekend

Save on The Witcher 2 and Dawn of War this weekend screenshot

It seems like the weekend is never too far away. Maybe that's just a fact of my rubbish day job but at least it means you're never too far away from some weekend PC game sales. This weekend you can save a fair whack of cash on The Witcher 2 and the Dawn of War games.

Good Old Games are running a special gamescom promotion, the centerpiece being a 40% discount on the digital premium edition of The Witcher 2. If you've been sitting on the fence as to whether or not to sample CD Projeckt's latest RPG, then this is a sweet deal especially as the game hasn't been out for too long. There's also a special gamescom promotional bundle of games all reduced by 40% as well like Jagged Alliance and Master of Orion.

On Steam, your weekend deal is a 50% reduction on the Dawn of War series, including the recent Dawn of War 2 expansions, Retribution and Chaos Rising. There's no reduction on the new Ultramarines pack, but that's only $7.49 anyway. In related news, those who pre-purchased Space Marine will have access to the single-player demo. That is, unless you're living in the UK it seems as the Space Marine store page is "unavailable in your region." Hmm...

Pre-purchase Deus Ex for sweet gear in Team
Fortress 2

Pre-purchase Deus Ex for sweet gear in Team Fortress 2 screenshot

Argh, why was I just interrupted from my riveting session of Team Fortress 2?! Oh, because there's been an update -- one which adds support for Deus Ex: Human Revolution promo items among other, less visually appealing things.

As you can see, there are eight new items. Four are cosmetic -- including a wicked mechanical arm for the Heavy that I predict everyone will equip -- and new weapons like a powerful-sounding sniper rifle, a gun arm thing for the Engineer, and more. These can be yours if you pre-purchase Human Revolution on Steam.

On the other hand, you can always pick these up from the Mann Co. Store, or by way of item drops and crafting.

Modern Warfare 3 available for pre-purchase on
Steam

Modern Warfare 3 available for pre-purchase on Steam screenshot

With all the shenanigans behind Battlefield 3's non-appearance on Steam, it's worth remembering that there is a big-name, modern military shooter available for your enjoyment on Steam later this year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available now for pre-purchase on Steam.

At $59.99, there's no pre-order bonuses or pre-purchase discount but that's not really going to concern the numerous PC gamers who were considering switching to EA's shooter come October. Fact of the matter is, Modern Warfare 3 is on Steam, Battlefield 3 isn't and as strange as it sounds, that is going to be a big factor when gamers decide which shooter they pick at the end of the year.

With the announcement that Modern Warfare 3 will have dedicated servers, I think a lot of PC gamers who were on the fence before about which shooter to buy, will be moving over to Activision's side. Steam + dedicated servers vs. Origin + co-op -- what's more appealing to you?

Minecraft developer Mojang to publish rad-looking
Cobalt

Minecraft developer Mojang to publish rad-looking Cobalt screenshot

The studio behind Minecraft and Scrolls is set to publish Cobalt, a game about cyborgs blowing each other to bits by independent developer Oxeye Game Studio.

"Mojang will help us with marketing, publicity and distribution, while we continue to develop and add stuff to Cobalt," reads a post on the developer's blog. "This is more of a team effort than the usual developer/publisher combo, and the first experimental attempt for Mojang to help another indie game developer to launch their game."

I remember seeing Cobalt on Reddit or somewhere a long way back and immediately getting the dev's site on my feeds. It looked promising back then and continues to today.

Ubisoft lightens up the DRM in Driver: San
Francisco

Ubisoft lightens up the DRM in Driver: San Francisco screenshot

A few weeks ago, Ubisoft announced that Driver: San Francisco would need a constant connection to the internet to be playable. This resulted in quite a few PC players to be pretty upset, to say the least. But I bring good news! Ubisoft has decided to listen to the fans, after sifting through a heaping pile of hate-mail, and loosened the ultra-strict DRM.

Now all you need to do is sign into the game with an internet connection once and the whole rest of the game can be run in offline mode. Reminds me of a recent story where Capcom pulled the same move with Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. Coincidence?

At any rate, here is the official statement Ubisoft made, if you're into that sort of thing:

We've heard your feedback regarding the permanent internet connection requirement for Driver and have made the decision to no longer include it. So this means that Driver PC gamers will only need to sign in at game launch but can subsequently choose to play the game offline.

PS Vita screens: See LiveArea, near, Party and
Trophies

PS Vita screens: See LiveArea, near, Party and Trophies screenshot

Want to see what the online components will look like on the PlayStation Vita's shiny OLED screen? Want to see what a portable game system with day-one messaging and online capabilities looks like? These new screen grabs show a bit of everything.

You can see how you'll find friends and ultimately match up with them for gaming in these screens of Vita's near (see nearby gamers), LiveArea and Party (cross-game voice chat) applications. There's also a few that show group messaging in action. It's sad that this portable makes the PS3's online functionality look wimpy.

There's also a couple of screens that show what Trophy browsing will look on your Vita. Finally, you will also see what the PlayStation Store looks like.

All of this is looking very touchscreen friendly and slick, I'd say. What do you think?

Crime Story Preview (Android, Facebook)

Game Insight's upcoming forray into the crime genre looks great in screenshots, but what about in action? Well, judging by the brand new trailer for Crime Story, it looks even better. The isometric visuals feature plenty of details, and it looks like it will be quite satisfying when you fire off a few rounds from your gun or, better yet, your bazooka.

Preview: Escape Plan

Preview: Escape Plan screenshot

Escape Plan was announced for the PlayStation Vita at the Sony press conference at gamescom, but not much information was really divulged. Escape Plan is a puzzle game in which two rather odd-looking characters must try to escape from an elaborate prison filled with all kinds of dangerous and devious traps.

We were invited to come and find out more about the monochrome world that this game takes place in and it's one to keep an eye on.

Escape Plan (PlayStation Vita)
Developer: Funbits Interactive
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Release Date: TBA

The two playable characters are a strange-looking couple. Lil is small and skinny whilst Laarge is massive and fat. Both of the characters have their entire bodies covered in a rubber suit with the exception of their pale white, ghost-like faces. On their chests is the number “0”, but every time they die that number will increase. The game will keep track of how many times the characters have died and we were promised that this number would be significant at some point in the game.

The story is a bit of a mystery, with the player offered no reason as to who Lil and Laarge are or why they are trapped in this elaborate prison. We were told that as the player progresses through the game, the answers to these questions should be revealed.

Interacting with the world is done entirely with the front and back touch screens. For example, back touching a contracted platform will cause it to extend forward and front touching will push it back. To move a character, you simply tap on them once and then flick which direction you want them to go. They won’t stop walking on their own, so you’ll need to keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t walk off a ledge or into a spinning fan.

Lil and Laarge have unique abilities that must be used in order to safely traverse each room. Lil can inflate himself when he comes across helium pumps, causing him to float into the air like a balloon. He can be steered by tilting the PS Vita in the direction you want him to float. To deflate him, you “pinch” him by pressing the front touch screen and the back touch pad at the same time. This has the bonus effect of causing Lil to zoom forward whilst making a hilarious farting sound.

Laarge can use his considerable weight to smash obstacles. Tapping on him and then flicking down will cause Laarge to perform a “butt smash,” making him leap into the air and then land on his big behind with a mighty thud. He can use this to break through weak points in the floor and gain access to areas Lil cannot.

At first, the player will only have one of the two characters to guide safely to the exit, but as the game progresses, you will have to guide them both at the same time. An example of this was a puzzle that required Lil to raise Laarge up to the exit on a platform by pulling a lever, then floating up through a bunch of dangerous spinning gears to get there himself.

I honestly wasn’t really expecting to like Escape Plan as much as I did. The simple yet clever use of the touch screens combined with a game world filled with personality has caused this title to rocket up in my list of games to keep an eye on. I suggest you keep an eye out for this one too.
