Q.U.B.E. Review (PC)

Gamezebo Rating: 80

Let me just get this out of the way since the comparison is inevitable: The first person puzzle game Q.U.B.E. will immediately remind you of Portal. They?re both set in stark environments with ambient sounds and a severe sense of isolation, all while you?re making your way through a facility with a series of tests to challenge your sense of problem solving. While Q.U.B.E. might not be the classic that Portal turned out to be, it still holds its own.

The AVGN's MAGFest Q&A covers the upcoming film
and more

The AVGN's MAGFest Q&A covers the upcoming film and more screenshot

MAGFest may already be a distant memory for some, but for losers such as me who didn't have the privilege of attending, every new video and detail from that glorious weekend is news to us.

James Rolfe, a.k.a. the Angry Video Game Nerd, held his own Q&A panel, during which he fielded many questions regarded AVGN, his other video projects, and of course, the upcoming AVGN movie. On that last topic, James has announced that principal shooting is ready to begin. For the next few months, he'll be living in Los Angeles to work on the film. As mentioned before, the central focus of the film will be on E.T. for the Atari 2600 and the mythos that surrounds that infamous game. Additionally, the movie will examine the Nerd's life outside of the basement and away from videogames. James hopes the film will be accessible to people unfamiliar with the Nerd, and if all goes according to plan, it will be completed by the end of the year and showcased in select theaters.

There are a few more interesting nuggets during the 22-minute panel, as there always are during such sessions. Mad props to James for selecting Chrono Trigger as his game of choice should he only be allowed to play one more game for the rest of his life!

Please vote for Pirates in the next World of
Keflings DLC

Please vote for Pirates in the next World of Keflings DLC screenshot

So here's the deal. NinjaBee has teamed up with PlayXBLA, Microsoft's official Xbox Live Arcade blog, to let fans choose which of three themes will be turned into a new DLC kingdom for A World of Keflings. You can choose between the Graveyard, Candy, and Pirate themes. The problem is that for some reason, both the Graveyard and Candy themes currently have more votes than the Pirates one. Since there is no Ninja theme, this is unacceptable.

You can vote for the Pirates theme over here, which doesn't require registration and allows you to vote once a day. Doing so also gives you the chance to win game codes, Keflings plushies, Keflings t-shirts, and the grand prize of being turned into a Kefling character for the new game. I'm not really sure how they will know who voted what, but leaving a comment using one of the six popular login options at your disposal is a good bet. Check out the official theme descriptions and some concept images below.

Graveyard
Enter the graveyard: a playfully macabre land where Zombie and Skeleton Keflings work to build a ghoulish town.

Candy
An evil wizard, a unicorn king, gingerbread Keflings and... bears?!? Come and build a new kingdom entirely out of candy!

Pirate
Visit Ratbeard's home and find him mixed up in the kef-buckling antics of his pira... that is, MERCHANT friends.

Free mod Elevator: Source is crazy enough to work

Free mod Elevator: Source is crazy enough to work screenshot

Elevator: Source reminds me of a time back when technical limitations were more constraining, before some of today's popular genres even existed. A team could build a game about inner tubes, or put a banjo-playing man on a box for a shmup, and that was perfectly acceptable behavior.

That freedom still exists today and is tapped into by independent designers, though some would argue that the lack of limits on creativity can be paralyzing. With mainstream game budgets as monstrously huge as they tend to be, it's no wonder publishers aren't jumping up and down to fund risky projects.

This is all a long-winded way of saying Elevator: Source is batsh*t crazy on a conceptual level, and I love the game for it. You'll need both Garry's Mod and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 to partake in this delightful co-op adventure -- otherwise, give the heartwarming video demonstration above a watch.
