What better way to celebrate Friday the 13th than with a small tribute to the classic NES game. I got this game for free as a kid (along with Karnov) because a cousin didn't like them, or something. I was very young, and I can't exactly remember the circumstances except that I was so young this game scared the crap out of me.
It all worked out for the best, and I grew up loving all the terrible 1980s horror flicks.
Friday the 13th is a solid game, but some people (like the AVGN) seem to hate it. It's not a walk in the park... well actually it is a walk through a park, but its a zombie-infested, siolated camp park. You'll have to explore caves, abandoned houses (in a sort of 1st-person perspective), forests, a lake, and the fear within yourself if you want to conquor one of the most challenging and rewarding popular NES titles.
I didn't beat this game until college, and it took a few days of trying, but I still clearly remember giving Jason the middle finger after so many years of failing to save Crystal Lake.

Ola El Presidente! There is more Tropico 4 goodness on the way, as Kalypso has announced an expansion to the popular banana republic sim: Modern Times. The new expansion will focus on taking your economy to the 21st century of global financial markets, space exploration, and the rise of the Internet. You can expect new buildings, challenges, and edicts that let you do things like limiting Internet access for Tropicans.
Modernizing your island across 12 new scenario missions, you'll upgrade old buildings to new variants and replace obsolete buildings with modern ones. Hopefully the upgraded buildings will be about the same size as the old ones so you don't have to create an entirely new layout for your city. Tropico 4: Modern Times will be released this March on both the PC ($19.99/£19.99/€29.99) and Xbox Live Arcade (1200 Microsoft Points). I'm not sure why it is cheaper on XBLA, but perhaps it's to make up for not releasing Tropico 3: Absolute Power on the Xbox 360.
If you missed Mash Tactics earlier this week, catch up on Jon and Wesley playing Tropico 4 on Twitch TV.

Yeah, we really shouldn't have done that.
In observance of today's horrific pseudo-holiday, Max and I managed to break every single piece of equipment in our studio! By which I mean, something broke in the studio and we had neither the time nor the resources to fix it because everyone is at CES right now. Unfortunately, that means we didn't get to play Hole in the Wall as planned. We did, however, do a brief Q&A in its place.
As far as news goes, Lollipop Chainsaw got a cheeky new trailer, Diablo III has been officially approved by the South Korea Game Rating Board, Saints Row 3 got some Cheap (read: free) DLC, and fifty previously released WiiWare demos have made their way back to the Wii shop with little to no explanation.

Looking at these new Max Payne 3 screens has made me realize how badly Max Payne needs a stylist. Sure, he pulls it off with the grey suit, but then he goes and has some sort of midlife crisis causing him to shave his head and wear a tank top. A tank top, people! Don't even get me started on his horrible taste in ties.
This has been a moment in Hamza Aziz's fashion ridicule corner. You're welcome.

A programmer from Codemasters' recently-closed development studio is accusing the company of some pretty shady dealings, including unpaid overtime and legal bullying.

Rayforce is now out on the App store for iPhone and iPod users. It's the classic shoot 'em up you remember, but there are some new features like the obvious touch controls. Additionally, you can view the game in the original arcade aspect ration setting or play in the newly added full-screen zoomed mode. Plus there's the option between manual and automatic firing controls now.
The only downside is that Rayforce is going for $11.99. It's weird, that price would be normal if it was on XBLA or PSN. But on the iPhone? Perhaps I'm just spoiled by all the $0.99 games available on the App store.

With a title that I would have expected our own Chad Concelmo to concoct, ScrewAttack has kicked off a new series entitled The Best EVER! The premise is quite self-explanatory: folks ask SA their opinions on the best "whatever," then they present their responses. Instead of doing a typical "top 10" list or making a single, definitive choice, each staff member offers his personal favorite.
For this first episode, the topic is retro bosses. I'm guessing "retro" means any console at least two generations back -- The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day is one of the picks. The video serves as a good discussion starter, because who doesn't love to share their most favoritest things ever?
For me, my favorite retro boss would be the Mecha Dragon from (duh!) Mega Man 2. You are jumping across the floating blocks in Wily's castle when this beast pops up and starts chasing you down. You can't fight it just yet, so you keep hopping along and hope you don't miss a jump. Most all other bosses in the Mega Man series give you some clue as to the impending battle, like a chamber gate or Wily's logo in plain view. Not only does the Mecha Dragon appear completely out of the blue, you can't even engage it in battle straight away. No other Mega Man boss since has ever followed a similar structure.

Jewel Quest is one of the most established franchises in the match-three world, but over the years, competition from newer, flashier titles began to overshadow its name. The franchise is still kicking however, with the newest installment, Jewel Quest: The Sapphire Dragon, containing a wide variety of level types and a lengthy storyline that sees you helping a group of adventurers fight pirates and discover lost treasures.

At this rate, January 18 is going to be a very productive day. Two more notable gaming companies that feel passionately enough about the Internet to shut down their sites for a day are joining the fight against SOPA and PIPA.
According to Notch, both Minecraft.net and Mojang.com will go dark next Wednesday. Similarly, Red 5 Studios plans to take down its website, community site, and the Firefall beta for 24 hours.
"We are extremely disappointed in this misguided legislation," writes Red 5 CEO Mark Kern. "We are also ashamed of the ESA for supporting a bill which is clearly not in the best interests of gamers or the game industry." It's not just talk, either. The studio "will not attend E3 unless ESA reverses their stance."
Perhaps if this trend continues, we'll start to see some of the massive sites (Google, Facebook, Wikipedia) join in as well. It's tremendous to see gamers come together like this, but we need to reach much further if we're going to prevent SOPA, PIPA, and future legislation of this nature from becoming a reality.

Sure, robots tossing old people down an elevator shaft sounds extreme, but Steven Spielberg claims it's a relevant vision of the future.
