Moon Diver looks like a bonertastic good time

Moon Diver looks like a bonertastic good time screenshot

I have not heard of Square Enix's downloadable sidescroller Moon Diver before today, but it sounds like it has quite a bit of potential to it. It was announced before E3 of 2010, but very little has been seen of it until today.

The game takes place in the year 2081, where inanimate objects have been brought to life by evil forces in order to wage war on humanity. Cars, cups and even bridges will take on the player, who is part of an elite ninja team called The Moondivers. Why not, eh?

Gameplay includes charge attacks, sliding maneuvers, flip jumps, clinging to surfaces, chain kills and four-player co-op. Essentially, a huge amount of crazy action contained in a humble downloadable platformer. I'm definitely down for some of that!

PAX East panel/band schedule is up + I'm on a
panel!

PAX East panel/band schedule is up + I'm on a panel! screenshot

PAX East 2011 is looking better by the second and the panel schedule looks like it's rocking. This year's keynote is by Jane McGonigal, author of "Reality is Broken" and one of the creative minds behind I Love Bees. The keynote begins at 10:30AM at the Main Theatre.

Around that same time, I'm going to be on a panel! The Online Gaming Communities and "Real Life" Relationships panel is being held in the Cat Theatre on Friday from 11:00AM to 12:00PM. Derek Nolan, Co-Founder of 2old2play will be hosting the panel that I'll be on along with Ross Furman from SFX360, Stan Press from Astro Gaming and Morgan Romine from the Frag Dolls/Ubisoft. We're going to be talking about the online gaming communities we're part of, our real life experiences interacting with strangers from the Internet and other sappy sh*t like that.

And on the concert front, The Protomen, MC Frontalot and Metroid Metal will all be playing Friday night and VGO (Video Game Orchestra), Paul and Storm and Jonathan Coulton all perform Saturday night. Can't wait to see The Protomen live!

If you're going to PAX East this year, be sure to join our Google Group where we're planning for all the good times.

Nippon Ichi Software working on NGP title for
this year

Nippon Ichi Software working on NGP title for this year screenshot

Nippon Ichi Software held a little event in San Francisco the other night where they showed off Arc Tonelico Qoga and Cave Story 3DS. While everyone was giddy with joy over a new Cave Story, Nippon Ichi Software Vice President, Johanna Hirota, talked about a couple of other games in the works that sounded pretty exciting.

Johanna first mentioned that NIS is "coming up with a game for the NGP" and while nothing was said about this exact project (rumor is it's a new Badman game), Johanna did say that the game is schedule for "this coming year." The speculation right now is that the NGP will be out this year, at least in Japan, so this is further evidence that we'll be seeing Sony's next handheld by year's end.

Johanna then went on to talk about another project and it's "going to be kind of surprising I think and exciting all the same." Perhaps NIS is working on a genre that isn't another RPG? We should be hearing more of this new project really soon as NIS was hoping to have the game to show off at this event.

Weekend Destructainment: Skyrim is bonertastic

video details and more

Skyrim will give you a boner. Fact.

The sexy keeps on going with some Super Mario porno action. Then it's a music video made through the Kinect. Next up, check out what a Capcom Fight Club is like. Then it's some "forgotten" NES games. Weirdness continues with The Big Heavy.

Then it's the Pokemon intro remade in real life. Next, it's a World of Warcraft dance party. Then it's some sweet bus tricks in Grand Theft Auto IV. The Destructainment ends with Sonic's little gambling problem.

Super Mario Porno. Thanks, Dr. CoolSex!

UK retailer Game ask for ID, famous woman gets
mad

UK retailer Game ask for ID, famous woman gets mad screenshot

In the UK we run a show called Mary Queen of Shops. It follows Mary Portas, a retail communications expert who is currently tackling large retail shops and their customer services. Mary has recently taken to Twitter to complain about Game, one of the largest videogame retailers in the UK following an incident with them.

Her 17-year-old son was suggested videogames rated 15+ by members of staff, but once at the counter he was unable to provide the correct ID to prove he was over 15 years of age. Thus the counter staff were unable to sell him the game. The son had attempted to use an Oyster transport card which had both his photo and date of birth on it, but Game staff can only accept legally recognized forms of ID, such as government issued ID cards, passports or driving licence.

While I understand there was also an issue with a rude attitude of Game's support when Mary Portas called to complain, I couldn't help but find myself enraged with the whole story.

As an industry, we are constantly scrutinized by those outside of it, and the selling of age-restricted games to minors is a huge debate. When I worked for Gamestation  selling games to those whose age we were unsure of without ID was a massive no-no. If caught, we would lose our job, get a personal on the spot fine, the store would get fined, and as a result we would ID people to hell and back. As a Mother and a retail communications expert I feel utterly shocked that she is annoyed that large companies are actually sticking to the rules that have been put in place with the safety and well-being of her son in mind. At one point she even fails to understand the important of age restriction on video games claiming "...we're not talking drink, but a 15plus video".

While I imagine that the majority of us have been in a situation where we have been asked for ID that we have been unable to provide -- despite being over the age required -- we accept that this is the law. As an industry, we have the right to enforce the rules that are in place and I'm happy that the Game staff stuck to their gun on the shop floor. It is just a pity that Mary Portus doesn't seem to respect the rules or understand the importance of age restrictions, by following these laws we only work to increased the reputation for gaming and the games industry. Funnily enough though, Game didn't seem to have a problem when he went back and used his passport.

Confirmed But Unreleased

Confirmation from multiple sources is a time-honored concept in journalism -- getting the same information via two different channels is generally a good way to validate news before it gets published.

But I ran across something interesting in the April 1990 issue of Video Games & Computer Entertainment magazine -- it features back-page ads from two different used game operations, Play It Again and The Fun Company (aka Funco, whose Funcoland stores would eventually be absorbed into GameStop.)  Both companies' game listings reference a number of NES games as "coming soon" titles, many of which remained unreleased -- and their listings and errors are suspiciously similar.  This is from the Play It Again ad:

Among the unreleased games are Aegina's Prophecy from Vic Tokai, which was released (or at least advertised) for the Commodore 64 but never the NES, and an 8-bit home version of Capcom's arcade classic Black Tiger.  There's a listing for something called Hector Vector -- the only possible connection I can find is that the characters in Nintendo's R.O.B. game known in the US as Stack Up are named Hector and Vector.  And both ads also list Empire City, probably a Western version of Empire City 1931.

More telling is that both ads list a mysterious game called Caracresta, which is likely a clerical corruption of Terra Cresta, also listed correctly in both ads as an upcoming title.  So this most likely means that both companies were working from the same questionable list of upcoming games, trying to stay ahead of magazine lead times to keep their ads as current as possible.

But there are a few games mentioned in the Play It Again ad that aren't mentioned by Funco -- Battlefield Napoleon, apparently a US release of Irem's Napoleon Senki.  And Hulk Hogan, which is probably an incorrect name for Wrestlemania.  Play It Again also lists both Touchdown and Touchdown Fever, almost certainly a simple duplication error.

And then there's Street Fighter -- long before the sequel Street Fighter II became a major hit, or even arrived in arcades, somebody apparently thought Capcom was going to port the original 1987 arcade game Fighting Street to the NES.

This makes me wonder:  If players had been exposed more broadly to Street Fighter on the NES circa 1990, how would the vastly superior sequel have been received?  Would it have whetted our appetites, or turned us away without ever dropping a token?

Alternate universes, man.  Like wow.
