Friday Links: Gestural Interface Edition

This man does something incredibly interesting: he makes the fake User Interfaces for crazy film technology. Second to … I don’t know, cake tester … this is probably the greatest job ever. That’s not all in this week’s links, however. While the videogame offering was fairly weak, there are some great Epson commercials, car rental advertisements [...]

New Darksiders video is about an angry horse

New Darksiders video is about an angry horse screenshot

The latest and last of Darksiders' "Hell Books" has been unleashed, ending the series of videos on War's faithful steed, Ruin. An angry, fiery horse that comes out of the ground, War can swing his sword or shoot his bolter (it's blatantly a bolter) from atop Ruin at anything foolish enough to stand in his way. Looks pretty badical.

Darksiders is one of the games I'm most looking forward to. It's slowly gone from a reasonably cool looking action title to an incredibly promising and badass game. Hopefully all the promotion is worth it. We'll get a review of Darksiders up as soon as possible. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd Preview

Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd is an upcoming hidden object adventure from PlayPond, the same team that gave us the wonderfully creepy Mystery Legends: Sleepy Hollow. The game follows the hunt for Sweeney Todd, the murderous demon barber from 18th century London who first appeared as a character in the "penny dreadful" pulp novels of Victorian-era England.

The game features widescreen high-definition (HD) graphics, but the best part of all: according to PlayPond, the game's cutscenes are presented as a musical - in other words, with songs and singing!

Jewel Quest 4: Heritage Review

In the aptly titled Jewel Quest: Heritage, Rupert's arch-rival Sebastian Grenard has stolen the Golden Jewel Board, claiming it as a family heirloom. In order to prove that the board is rightfully his, Rupert must trace the origins of the Jewel Board all the way back to the Aztec Empire while investigating his own family tree to see how the history of the jewel board is intertwined with the lives of his own ancestors.

The fourth game in the gem-swapping match-3 series features the same core gameplay as its predecessors. The goal is to match three or more jewels to clear them from the board and turn the tiles below to gold. the board is complete when all the tiles are turned to gold before the allotted time limit runs out.

November NPD sales figures show some unexpected
results

by: Dan Keener
NEWS - With the holidays approaching and November being one of the biggest sales months of the year, it was expected that we would see some impressive sales figures for both games and hardware. NPD Group released their November 2009 sales analysis yesterday and it contained some interesting data. What was expected was that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 would dominate software sales and it certainly did. With a combined 6 million plus in sales, it was by far and away the top seller. What was surprising was that the 360 version outsold the PS3 version 4.2m to 1.87m, for a greater than 2-1 ratio. Along with strong sales for Assassin’s Creed 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, the 360 had a very impressive sales month for software as did the Nintendo Wii.

Video Game Software Sales:

• Modern Warfare 2 (360) - 4.20M
• Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) - 1.87M
• New Super Mario Brothers (Wii) - 1.39M
• Assassin's Creed 2 (360) - 794.7K
• Left 4 Dead 2 (360) - 744.0K
• Wii Sports Resort (Wii) - 720.2K
• Wii Fit Plus (Wii) - 679.0K
• Assassin's Creed 2 (PS3) - 448.4K
• Dragon Age: Origins (360) - 362.1K
• Mario Kart w/Wheel (Wii) - 315.0K
The most surprising news was found in the hardware sales. Even with a price cut, aggressive marketing and recording their third highest sales month since launch, the PS3 was outsold (yes, outsold) by 100k+ units by the Xbox 360 (819.5k to 710.4.) That one took me by complete surprise when I looked at the numbers, and was totally unexpected. Take a look at the figures below and see how everything shook out during the biggest sales month of the season:

Video Game Hardware Sales:

• DS - 1.70M
• Wii - 1.26M
• 360 - 819.5K
• PS3 - 710.4K
• PSP - 293.9K
• PS2 - 203.1K
The PlayStation 3, it only does everything…except outsell the Xbox 360 in November

iPhone: Civilzation Revolution

Last year 2K games decided to take on a remarkable challenge; re-inventing a massive nation-building simulation that could be played over days, week and years into a quick-play, one-sitting home console experience.  While Civilization purists may have balked at the results, there's no denying that Civilization Revolution opened up the strategy series to a completely different brand of gamers.  Now, a year later, 2K is re-inventing the experience again for the iPhone.
