Serious HD coming to Xbox 360 on January 13

NEWS - Oh, you thought that the Xbox 360 was already HD?  Think again!  Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter has gone gold and scheduled to be available on XBLA starting January 13, 2010. 

I've been playing the PC version for the past week and have been having a blast.  You can expect a review up on Gaming Nexus soon.  The same 15 levels of chaos that contain an epic amount of creatures to shoot are back from the original, but this time in beautiful HD.

If you haven't been to the game's web site, check it out.  It's full of humor and infomercial goodness that includes testimonials.  Get ready to get Serious in HD next month.  For an idea of what to expect, check out this before and after picture!

NieR gets new screens and angsty, angsty box art

NieR has mostly been focusing its PR chicanery on the Japanese market, but today we got a nice little parcel with screens and box art hidden within as publisher Square Enix turns its eyes toward we Western devils. The game also has a release window now, pegged for a North American launch in Spring 2010. 

The game's graphics aren't exactly stunning, but it's still promising to be a pretty solid and brutal action RPG. It's got plenty of freaky creature designs, a load of blood and more grizzled angst than you could shake a stick at. All the ingredients for a fun time, so I'm certainly keeping a hopeful eye on it.

My Favorite Indie Fest Entry So Far: The Swapper

I have for a number of years now been fortunate enough to help judge entries for the annual Independent Games Festival.

Judging usually means playing around with early builds of an eclectic mix of games from unheard of developers, some of whom go on to have a very profound impact on the industry.

Each year, as one of many, many judges, I play a dozen or so good, bad and ugly games. And each year I come across at least one that I fall deeply in love with.

This year that game is The Swapper. It's not without its bugs, but the heart of the game is deeply intriguing to me.

From the developer's site:

"The Swapper is about treating human beings as objects. It's also a puzzle and a platformer. And a piece of weirdness."

The game plays with the idea of cloning, lights and shadows and the ability to transfer control between copies of yourself. More interesting is the notion that an old copy of you, the original, the one that you used to control, is seemingly disposable. It's a little chilling on some level and makes me want to keep a close eye on The Swapper in the future.

Gotcha: Celebrity Secrets Preview

Gamezebo got its hands on an early preview of PlayFirst's upcoming hidden object game Gotcha: Celebrity Secrets, and we're here to report on what we saw after playing through the first chapter as Gaby, a celebrity blogger who's out to get the juiciest Hollywood scoops.

As the chapter opens we find Gaby trying to grow Gaby's Gossip Blog into the most popular celebrity gossip blog in town and beat out her closest competition, an arrogant rival named Dante. The big thing that makes Gotcha different from the other hidden object games we've seen before is that you're primarily searching for people rather than a random assortment of "stuff."
