Meet the voice cast of Mass Effect 2

Meet the voice cast of Mass Effect 2 screenshot

Bioware didn’t shoot for low-grade when it came to hiring the voice talent in the next Mass Effect. America’s favorite president Martin Sheen and the made-for-TV professional a--hole Adam Baldwin, as well as several other new cast members are slated to join previous cast members such as Keith David and Seth Green. Neat.

EA released a video this morn’ that puts digital faces to the Hollywood talent. For the most part, we’ve found ourselves agreeing with the choices. The only thing rubbing us as odd is the Illusive Man -- Martin Sheen’s pipes and that youngish face don’t match. We’d be more on board if the scenes captured were from some kind of intergalactic oval office.

Latest Borderlands console patch fixes
stat-wiping bug

Latest Borderlands console patch fixes stat-wiping bug screenshot

The Gearbox doctors slapped a band-aid on the festering stat wiping wound in the Xbox 360 version of RPS Borderlands this afternoon. But that wasn’t all these digital meat magicians tweaked -- official release says Achievements now unlock, auto-aim now disables correctly, Lillith’s “Silent Resolve” is now functional …

… and much more that we can’t list for the sake of sanity on the front page. Check below the fold for the full patch notes.

We should note that this patch is headed to the PS3 in the future -- “arriving soon,” to be somewhat exact, according to the release this afternoon. We should also note that a few of these fixes, squashes and tweaks should work retroactively. If you earned an Achievement, you’ll get it. If you had your stats wiped, they’ll return. But that bond you developed with Lillith before you learned that a man provided the mo-cap for her? No. No, that won’t come back.

PATCH NOTES!

# Characters that have lost skill points will have them returned the next time they are loaded
# Most instances involving character data loss when playing online should no longer occur
# Item cards now display the intended five lines of text
# Achievements should now unlock properly. Players should automatically receive achievements that did not unlock correctly
# Fixed a progression issue in the Find Steele mission – characters affected by this issue should now be able to continue progressing
# Some issues involving external data manipulation of the backpack and character level have been addressed
# The auto-aim option should now fully disable auto-aim properly
# Fixed a bug that kept challenges and achievements from unlocking for the rest of a session after visiting arenas
# Fixed some formatting issues with the server list screen.
# Fixed an issue causing servers to report the incorrect plot mission.
# Proficiency progress to the next level should no longer be lost when leaving a multiplayer game as a client
# Lilith’s “Silent Resolve” skill now works as intended
# Fixed a bug that allowed Mordecai to spawn multiple Bloodwings
# Mordecai’s “Loaded” skill now increases mag capacity by 20%
# Roland’s “Scattershot” skill has had its spread adjustment corrected, and damage now increases at +5 per level

Clueless Gaijin Gaming: Spin Pair

This week, we take a language-impaired look at Spin Pair, a Japanese puzzle game for the PC Engine published in 1990 by Media Rings Corporation.  I'm saddened that the era of the cute game appears to have passed for the moment -- today's hard-edged hardcore style misses out on the lighter side of videogames, and has no room for cute little blonde witches obsessed with matching up shapes to produce charming little agricultural products and birds.

As near as I can make out from the case art and sparsely illustrated manual, our little friend's quest to match up shapes has something to do with a full-grown, evil-looking witch.  But I can't tell if she's a threat, or a mentor; at least such knowledge isn't required for playing the game.

The game has a Normal mode that jumps straight into puzzling; a Story mode, where levels progress in a specific order, though there's no discernible plotline; and a two-player Battle mode.  There's also a notable special feature in the Vs. Mode, indicating that Spin Pair was aimed squarely at the PC Engine GT portable market, supporting two players linked with a cable.  There's not much in the way of introduction for this HuCard-based game, and the graphics are large and simple, well-suited to the portable handheld version of NEC's classic Japanese console.

Spin Pair is a conventional puzzle game, with the added aggravation that it's not a matter of simply matching up like colors in groups.  Complementary shapes must also be aligned, and a shape's mirror image must be dropped directly on top of it, causing the shapes to merge, turn into something cute, and wipe out any shapes of the same color on the same row.  New shapes arrive in pairs -- the player can switch their places left-to-right, or rotate BOTH of the pieces, to arrive at a workable fit.  When the required number of pairs of each color has been matched, the stage is clear.

Spin Pair is a simple game -- the music is pleasant, with several tuneful options to choose from, and the gameplay is addictive in the traditional puzzle game fashion.  And it's largely in English, which makes it a decent import candidate at the right price.  But it does become repetitive, and as the shapes become more complex it becomes more difficult to avoid the inevitable.

I spent a few hours with it -- it's not a must-play, but a fun little semi-addictive puzzler, and anyone with a PC Engine GT portable should definitely consider this one -- it's well-suited to the small screen.
