[Backlog is the ongoing quest to rid Conrad Zimmerman's collection of unfinished games. As voted on by the Destructoid community, Conrad plays each game from start to finish live on Destructoid's Twitch.tv channel every weeknight at 8pm Pacific]
Tonight Backlog starts a brand new game by diving in to 3D Dot Game Heroes. The game is cheery and bright, with lots of charm. But as a wise friend once told me, "cute doesn't cut it in the morning," so I'm expecting this game to hold up the other end of the stick and deliver on the gameplay. I've fiddled in this one a bit, mostly just playing with the sword, but I'm excited to kick things off tonight and really push through.
Come join me as I play 3D Dot Game Heroes live from the very beginning to the very end. I'm playing live and hanging out with the chat goons right now over on Destructoid's Twitch.tv channel!

So.
There is very little left to be said about Nyan Cat, except that it's my profound disappointment to inform you that Konami did not, in fact, release a licensed Nyan game in 1988. Not only would Nyan Cat vs. Tac Nayn have made a fantastic little game (a shmup, perhaps?), but it would have given this boxart -- a mock-up by artist J. R. Baker -- an excuse to exist.
The funny thing about Baker's project -- beside the idea's pop cultural capital -- is that it wouldn't have exactly been out of place next to games like Mega Man or Phalanx; the box art for those games could only have been borne out of the collective, cocaine-fueled fever dream of the late '80s. Nyan Cat's in good company.
I also particularly like the KB Toys sticker Baker included -- it's a nice touch.
If you're disappointed that Nyan Cat vs.Tac Nayn isn't a real game, don't be. Channel that impotent fury into buying a print of the illustration. Baker suggests an opposing diptych, so that the two adversaries can be forever locked in combat on your wall.

According to research done by Newzoo, half of the adult population of Germany plays videogames on a regular basis. The same applies to France and the United Kingdom, as all three countries combined have a total market of 153 million people who play on PCs, consoles, mobile platforms and on social websites like Facebook.
Germany is the most important market of the EU with a volume of €4.6 billion ($6.5 billion) and 24 million gamers, followed by the U.K. with €4.1 billion ($5.8 billion) and about 16 million gamers. Last but not least, there's France with a volume of €3.2 billion ($4.5 billion) and 10,4 million gamers. Additionally, 63% of the men play videogames and 54% of the women now enjoy videogames.
Altogether, it is quite an impressive market, where a lot of money can be made. Now, if only someone could explain to me why we're getting shafted so often when it comes to localizations! The EU gets games later then the U.S. (if at all) on a regular basis!

I grew up obsessed with the history of the pioneers and westward expansion. I can remember long hours spent playing The Oregon Trail in all its EGA glory. So I was very excited to get to review Pioneer Lands, a new time management/simulation game from NevoSoft. While Pioneer Lands does have its moments of fun, it feels very familiar and doesn?t offer anything new. Still, the game is addictive, but it just doesn?t have the feel you would expect from a pioneer themed game.

FortressCraft is the first Xbox Live Indie Game to break $1 million in sales, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the last. Unless, of course, FortressCraft Chapter 2 ever comes out.
ProjectorGames was able to recognize a need of the market -- in this case, Xbox 360 players wanting a certain block-centric experience readily available in many forms on PC -- and capitalize on it. Nothing wrong with that. Although I will say it doesn't interest me personally.
350,000 of you, however, felt differently. Shame that this level of success is an outlier rather than the norm.

Starting next Wednesday, August 17, you can gain access to the multiplayer beta of TrackMania 2 Canyon by purchasing the game prior to its for-real launch. You might be thinking that's both surprisingly soon and a lot to ask for a mere beta, but Nadeo is only charging $24.99 here.
The map editor and mediatracker for video editing are included in this beta. And when the big day for the official release does come, you'll be upgraded to the latest version at no additional cost. Sounds worth doing to me. I never did get too deep into the prior TrackMania titles, but I feel strangely compelled to play this oddly named game.
Can't wait for the shocking plot twist involving the canyon.

NEWS - Saints Row: The Third is looking like the craziest urban crime simulator that's ever existed, and that's saying something considering the bar it's set for itself is all ready so high. This new video features pairs of creepy twins, along with all the other requisite insanity you'd expect from Saint's Row: The Third. Saints Row: The Third is set for release on November 15th.
