Psychonauts 2!

The DTOID Show: Mass Effect on iOS and Psychonauts 2?! screenshot

Could it be that all our dreams have suddenly been answered in just one, 13-minute news program? I hope not, otherwise I may as well pack up my desk and non-existent belongs RIGHT NOW. (Don't worry, I'll never give you the satisfaction.)

Today in videogame news, Nintendo and GameStop have teamed up for a $150 3DS sale just days before the Vita launches, Notch wants to help fund Psychonauts 2, and EA is finally bringing its beloved Mass Effects franchise to iOS. Meanwhile in Japan, Metal Gear Solid is getting some unique controls on the PS Vita, while Retro City Rampage gets a special announcement on February 20.

Importers: US Vita PlayStation Store is now
up...kinda

Importers: US Vita PlayStation Store is now up...kinda screenshot

Conrad told you earlier that a few Vita games were up on the PlayStation Store tonight, but now the full Vita PS Store has launched. This is the day that importers with Japanese Vita systems and US PSN accounts have been waiting for.

There's not much content on the Vita store yet, but there are a few games to buy as well as demos and videos. If you have PSP games or PS Mini titles, some of them are available for download to your Vita now. The PSOne titles are not downloadable yet.

I'm a bit concerned that some PSP titles aren't downloadable, with the message "cannot download using a PS Vita system." Here's an example of some of my own PSP games that aren't downloadable right now:

  • Gran Turismo PSP
  • PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe
  • Sega Genesis Collection
  • Fate unlimited codes
  • Hexyz Force

Plenty of other PSP games are downloadable, though. I've got God of War: Chains of Olympus pulling down now. It's not quite launch yet, so Sony could still be working out some bugs with the PSP offerings.

If you've got a Vita, check out the PS Store on your system now!

Facebook Credits not converting so well and
distributing apps costs a lot money (Google+)

We?re live blogging from the Inside Social Apps 2012 Conference in San Francisco, from Philz Coffee a few blocks a way. While other attendees discuss and pretend to understand such industry jargon such as ?velocity? and ?ad mediation,? I sip my favorite coffee in the world and type away.

The big takeaways from the show so far: Facebook Credits conversion rates are much lower than I thought (5 - 10%) and you need to spend a lot of money to make it big on the iPhone and Android platforms. If you are a small developer, life is tough.

Double Fine turns to fans (and Kickstarter) to
    fund new video game

    by: Charles Husemann
NEWS - In the interest of being open, I've already contributed to this Kickstarter.

If you're and old school gamer you remember classic Schafer and Gilbert adventure games like Maniac Mansion and Grim Fandango.  While these games were popular back in the late 80's and early 90's, they are also the kind of games  that are not going to get funded or published in the current risk averse game industry despite a lot of pent up demand for the games.

Well the folks at Double Fine have announced that they want to do another one and to do so they are turning to the general population to fund the game via a Kickstarter campaign.  Their goal is to raise $400,000 over the next 33 days to fund the development of the game.  Depending on the funding level you'll can get everything from frame able posters to lunch with Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert and a tour of the Double Fine offices.  As of 10:20 they've already raised around $61,000 and the campaign is just a few hours old.

We've seen Kickstarters for other games in the past and I'm interested to see how this one does.  Again, I've already got some skin in the game but I'm hoping it's a success as it will help get this and other innovative games developed without developers having to sell their souls to a major publisher.

The last Naruto Generations trailer you'll ever
    need

The last Naruto Generations trailer you'll ever need screenshot

Naturally, it won't be the last last trailer, seeing as we're a few weeks from the actual launch of *deep breath* Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm: Generations. Namco Bandai will surely release a last burst of promo power to if only to remind you that March isn't entirely about Yakuza: Dead Souls, the Shogun 2 expansion, Ninja Gaiden III, Tales of Graces, and, er, Mass Effect.

But! Will their last-gasp trailer be nine minutes long, like this one is? Will it have information and footage of practically every single feature their deliciously flashy fighter will have on offer? Probably not! So if you watch just one trailer about this thing, it should be this one.

Double Fine to fund game exclusively through
    Kickstarter

Double Fine to fund game exclusively through Kickstarter screenshot

Double Fine is making an old school adventure game, but can't do it alone. In fact, the ambitious developer intends to fund its next project entirely through Kickstarter donations from people like you. No corporate middle-men, no signing away of rights -- this is the good stuff!

The game will be on Steam and aims to utilize modern touch technology. October 2012 is the planned release date for what is simply called "Double Fine Adventure" for the moment.

The Kickstarter page is right here, with donation rewards starting at $15. Those who donate the minimum will get the game, plus access to the beta. A tie-in documentary will be available for those who pledge higher amounts.

This is an exciting venture, and something I'm very excited to see. Here's wishing Double Fine the very best of luck ... though something tells me they'll get the cash from gamers easily. I just donated ... you gonna?

The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav looks delicious

The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav looks delicious screenshot

    video details and more

I'll be honest, Daedalic Entertainment's upcoming adventure game The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav only caught my eye because of the beautiful handdrawn graphics in the screenshots, and the above teaser video. While the video doesn't actually tell us much in terms of story or gameplay, it does show that it won't just be flat 2D graphics you'll be moving a cursor over. No matter how fancy the HD artwork is in any adventure game, it's always nice if things move around a little to add life to the environment.

Although The Dark Eye (Das Schwarze Auge) is claimed to be Europe's most successful pen & paper role-playing game, I can't say I could recall ever hearing about it. Not playing pen & paper RPGs might have something to do with that. A quick search reminded me of the PC RPG Drakensang, released in 2009 outside of the German-speaking countries, and the upcoming Demonicon -- both of which are set in the same The Dark Eye universe.

Whether or not the story of this The Dark Eye game is as good as the graphics look is something we'll find out closer to the PC game's release on March 23rd, 2012. No word about a prospective The Red Eye: Chains of Sativa spinoff yet.
