Impressions of Amnesia: The Dark Descent demo

by: Chad Smith
NEWS - You've seen the trailers I've been posting for Amnesia: The Dark Descent.  There's now a demo available ahead of the release this week.  I decided to download it, put on the headphones and dim the lights.  Boy, what a tense experience!

The demo appears to be the start of the game and you are given very little information to start with.  Apparently the amnesia your character has is self-inflicted.  The only information he leaves behind is a "note to self" telling you to kill an old man.  What's the significance of the old man and why does he need to die?  Why did you give yourself amnesia?  Where are you?  Are you really being chased or are you just completely losing it?

There are a few mechanics at work that you'll have to juggle.  The main one is your sanity.  You can slowly lose grip on reality the longer you're in the dark or the more "bizarre" things you see.  A lantern is at your side but consumes oil that's hard to come by.  It's a delicate balance to maintain your sanity and keeping moving.  There is even a small amount of health that can be restored by medicine found in the world.  It's all presented with a no-HUD approach to further pull you into the experience.

The last sequence in the demo is a suspenseful "don't touch the water" scenario.  I made an audible startled noise that caused my wife to ask me, "What's wrong?"  I brush it off, trying to act like a macho man.  She shouldn't know I'm scared by a video game.  Then the demo ends.  My thoughts:

  1. This is one of the most inventive methods of story telling in video games. The Penumbra series was just a warm-up.
  2. It should totally be brought to the PS3 with Move controls.  The mouse is an awesome way to involve the player with manual interaction.  I think it would translate well to the Move's motion controls and bring it to a larger audience.  Is a PSN download option in the future?
  3. I need a couple of night lights!
Let me know if you check out the demo and/or full game.  I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Start out early on All Roads to New Vegas

by: Sean Colleli
NEWS - The Fallout: New Vegas collector's edition includes a sneak peak of the graphic novel called All Roads, a prequel to the game that leads you right up to the beginning. All Roads is available for iTunes download right now, but it's cool that you can sample the story when you buy a copy of the new game. I'm sure hardcore Fallout fans will be getting the graphic novel regardless, but it's always good to have the option to try before you buy.

Duke Nukem IP now owned by Gearbox

by: Charles Husemann
NEWS - At the Gearbox panel at PAX today they announced that Gearbox now owns the Duke Nukem IP outright meaning that 3D Realms no longer has any claim to the property.  This should hopefully clear up any questions about the Duke franchise after the release of Duke Nukem Forever next year.

This is really a win-win for everyone as it means Gearbox gets another solid IP to add to it's stable of games, gamers will get a steady stream of Duke games, and 2K Games wins now that the franchise is in the hands of a developer that can actually deliver code.

I'm still wary that the game is going to be any good and if Duke represents anything but nostalgia anymore.  Of course Gearbox has a great track record (Borderlands was fantastic) but it's hard to set expectations for a game that's been in development for close to 13 years.

Rare spills guts about company's history

Rare spills guts about company's history screenshot

Rare has been kicking around for about 25 years, and despite having a low or two recent years, it has had a great impact on gaming. Known for being a bit camera shy, Rare tends to hold its secrets close to its chest. That's not to say it hasn't let people take a peek behind closed doors every now and then -- I remember getting those awesome DKC and Diddy Kong Racing promo tapes in the mail and getting so pumped.

To celebrate the company's wild history, EDGE magazine interviewed a few Rare staff heads for a massive eight-page retrospective. Some of this info may have been revealed in the past, but a lot of it sounds new. For example, did you know that every single level in DKC was designed on Post-it notes and assembled like jigsaw puzzles? Or that Banjo was supposed to go solo before Kazooie was conceived in order to justify the magical wings and legs that popped out of Banjo's backpack? How about that former NOA boss Minoru Arakawa thought that Conker's pissing on anthropomorphic flames was downright hilarious but former NOA chairman Howard Lincoln did not?

When asked what he'd put on the tombstone if the company abruptly kicked the bucket, Rare head of design Gregg Mayles cleverly answered, "Two big eyes on the top." Sweet. Check out the article summary over on DK Vine or grab the latest issue of EDGE to discover other juicy nuggets.

TERA at Pax means assets for us

by: Chad Smith
NEWS - Even if you weren't at PAX (did you prove it to win a copy of Mafia II?), TERA was there to strut around.  En Masse Entertainment had a new demo available for attendees to enjoy.  Those of us sitting at home can still see some of the great new content that was displayed.  The main area on display in the screens below is called Cultist's Refuge.  The trailer shows a lot of different locations and a huge variety of enemy types.  You can find the official site for TERA here if you're looking for more information.
