Cube World is a promising-looking RPG that has voxels and a focus on exploration. Oh yes. The video above gives a run through of where it's at in development -- keep in mind, this game only started in June of last year and there's plenty yet to be implemented.
The designer responsible for Cube World goes by the handle Wollay. As it so happens, he now works at Mojang. "Our current plan is to plug his brain directly to a keyboard and sell whatever comes out," writes Minecraft mastermind Notch. Don't worry, there's a diagram if you need help comprehending.
Wollay will continue expanding this current game in addition to starting something fresh at Mojang. "I'm used to work on multiple projects so I don't think it will impact Cube World development."
Independents growing up and giving back. These are the kinds of stories that make me want to do this job every day.

Capcom has clarified statements made yesterday concerning the ESA and its support of SOPA, claiming that while the ESA (and its explicit support) represents the publisher, the company itself does not have an official opinion on the matter. The message seems pretty clear -- Capcom would like to plead the fifth and pass the buck.
"We are members of the ESA (along side pretty much every other major publisher in our industry)," said Christian Svensson. "We've only ever stated that the ESA represents us in legislative matters (again, like every other publisher). We have not stated any stance on our support (or not) for SOPA. Inferring more than that is bad journalism (which seems to be rampant based upon the rereporting of a six word response to inquiry)."
It's a beautiful response, of course, representing the desire of many game publishers to have their cake and eat it too, while dodging any and all culpability. It's a smart PR move, in all fairness -- totally lacking in any sort of bravery, but smart nonetheless. At least Epic was bold enough to criticize the bill as it currently exists.
In any case, Capcom's statement reflects publishers' silent refusal to comment on an issue that could affect the entire industry. I especially like the bit where Svensson goes out of his way to mention "every other publisher," again highlighting the desire for these companies to remain safely anonymous among the herd.
It amazes me that this bill is apparently so adulated by corporations, but very few of them have the balls to explicitly praise it. You'd think that their fear of associating with SOPA would indicate what a shit idea it is.

While Ninja Theory thinks its new Devil May Cry will stand on its own merits, the developers want the game to be able to stand toe-to-toe with Sega's Bayonetta.

Back in October, we posted a super tall infographic that chronicled the history of console gaming (with some corners cut here and there). The cats responsible for that monster have concocted another massive chart, this one breaking down the various gaming genres into "worlds." Like, literal worlds. Each genre is its own galaxy of planets.
Some of the breakdowns focus on the mechanical attributes of a genre, such as the Platform and Sports worlds, whereas others focus on thematic attributes, like the Crime and Movie worlds. Each planet is represented by a few stand-out titles, such as Metal Gear Solid (War) and Ghost'n Goblins (Horror), which are then tagged with trivia like sales data and various development info.
Unfortunately, it's once again not all peaches and cream. There are some glaring errors (Star Fox on NES? A Link to the Past is an RPG?), and there will be the usual criticisms of "why isn't X game on here?" Still, it's fun for a casual glance. Give it a perusal!

The chaps over at Indie Royale just keep pumping out those PC/Mac bundles. Only a few weeks after their Xmas Bundle, they've now launched the New Year's Bundle for those of you whose wallets weren't gouged by the Steam sale over the holidays.
But there's something interesting about this bundle, namely Radiangame's arcade-style shooter Super Crossfire, which is exclusive right now to the New Year's Bundle. Also included are Nuclear Dawn, Max and the Magic Marker, and the recently released Fractal.
If you also spend more than the minimum price, you'll also receive the album "Beautiful Lifestyle" from chiptune duo George & Jonathan. I can understand there being a bit of a burnout with these indie bundles but they're still a good value for the money, especially for an exclusive game. According to their website, there's a few more bundles to come in 2012, so start saving now.

Zeboyd Games intends to bring its old-school role-playing game Cthulhu Saves the World to more platforms. With the help of Tinkerhouse Games, the team's brand of humor will grace iPhone, iPad, Android, and Mac early this year.
If the three-dollar price point on Xbox 360 was too high for your blood, take note: Zeboyd has dropped Cthulhu Saves the World down to a mere dollar, because it has the ability to do that now. Perfect timing, considering this release is celebrating its one-year anniversary.
I can see how some might grow tired of independent studios putting so much time into getting the same game out on different platforms rather than starting on an entirely new project, but come on -- for all these folks have to deal with for a remote chance at success, they deserve the opportunity.
