House of 1000 Doors: Family Secrets Review (PC)

Gamezebo Rating: 80

The only thing worse than failure is success, as any has-been writer can tell you. House of 1000 Doors: Family Secrets stars just such a writer in a twist on the familiar hidden object adventure ?save the souls? theme. While this version won't blow the doors off the hidden object world creatively speaking, it does represent one of the more well made and intricately-designed games in the genre.

Yu Suzuki says he can get the Shenmue license
from SEGA

Yu Suzuki says he can get the Shenmue license from SEGA screenshot

Yu Suzuki, creator of the beloved Shenmue series, believes that his studio could finagle the rights away from SEGA. If possible, he could finally make the Shenmue III that fans have ached for over the years.

"Shenmue's license is an IP that belongs to SEGA," he said. "We can obtain the license from SEGA."

Suzuki said this during a lengthy interview with the Shenmue Master fansite, where he went into great detail about future story plans and character details. It would appear that he has Shenmue III all figured out ... he just now needs the ability to make it.

Hopefully he does. It must be frustrating beyond belief to care so deeply about a creation that you no longer have any control over.

Yu Suzuki: We Can Obtain Shenmue License from SEGA [Spong]

DC Universe Online: Inventors welcome

DC Universe Online: Inventors welcome screenshot

The DC Universe has always had its fair share of mad scientists and genius inventors. Despite this, SOE opted to not have crafting in DC Universe Online from launch. Gadgeteers and scientist heroes or villains had to content themselves with purchasing or hunting down their precious mechanical gear. Some players felt that this was a glaring omission and something that should be standard for all MMOs, while others argued that crafting had no place in an action focused game like DCUO.

SOE have been expanding their MMO a lot over the last six months, including making it free-to-play and adding two major premium updates, now they've decided to move onto crafting. Crafting in DCUO has been given the appropriately modern name, Research and Development. They've put a simple explanation up on their site, which should answer some of your questions.

Players will be able to discover residual Exobytes from Braniac's attack -- called Exobits -- scattered all over Metropolis, Gotham and Central City. Along with plans they can be crafted into equipment mods and consumables. Besides constructing new items, players can salvage some gear to gain new components. It's nothing unexpected, but it should add more depth to the game (something it sorely needs) and a more lively player economy. There's no word on the launch date yet, but there will be more information provided on the DCUO webcast tomorrow at 4:30pm Pacific.

Syndicate's new co-op trailer has some heat

Syndicate's new co-op trailer has some heat screenshot

This latest trailer for Syndicate is pretty damn exciting. It's a sparse overview of the title's cooperative mode which lets you team up with three other operatives on assignments deemed to difficult for a lone agent to accomplish. We'll be getting a closer look at the mode very soon, but this has sufficiently wet my appetite.

I love the lack of pretense involved in corporate espionage as seen in cyberpunk settings like this one. It feels so much more honest for a company to send in its private security forces and just take the thing it wants from a competitor rather than try to bury them under legal red tape or acquire them in a fiscally hostile takeover.

SoulCalibur V goes gold, explodes in a shower of
images

SoulCalibur V goes gold, explodes in a shower of images screenshot

Namco Bandai brings word that SoulCalibur V has gone gold, nearly a month ahead of its release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. By the time you finish flipping through the absurd amount of screenshots provided, it'll almost be time for launch (January 31 in North America and February 3 in Europe).

By pre-ordering either the standard or Collector's Edition of the game, you'll get access to the character Dampierre for your trouble.

Does anyone actually take the time to look at this stuff? I took the time to upload it all, and some unfortunate soul was locked in a humid room until he finished working on the images, so it doesn't matter much now, either way.

Note: forgive the lack of a thumbnail on the video. Our player is going through a rough phase right now and insists on listening to nothing but old My Chemical Romance songs.

NFL Blitz has made its return, now on PSN and
XBLA

NFL Blitz has made its return, now on PSN and XBLA screenshot

It's always seemed that I'm doomed to failure in any game which takes its cues from a competitive sport, but that's not kept me from trying time and again over the years. And in that time I've found that pure simulation is the absolute enemy of fun when it comes to me, which is why I'm looking forward to downloading the new version of NFL Blitz. And, as of today, I can.

The arcade-style take on Grid Iron is currently available for $14.99 on PlayStation Network or from the Xbox Live Marketplace for 800 MSP. We'll be having a review from our own Samit Sarkar just as soon as he's managed to fully plumb its depths. And a little later tonight we'll see Max Scoville and Tara Long take their first crack at playing NFL Blitz (I hear comedy ensued), so stay tuned to Destructoid for that.

Loincloths and dual wielding in Dungeon Defenders

Loincloths and dual wielding in Dungeon Defenders screenshot

If your New Year's resolution was to use more swords, you're in for a treat. Dungeon Defenders -- the ARPG/Tower Defense hybrid -- is getting some new DLC for the new year. Players will finally be able to scowl a lot and fight with two swords, as the dual-wielding Barbarian class.

The colorful co-op game has already had its fair share of DLC since its launch in October, including the first part in The Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards series, of which four have been planned. Players will get a chance to fight with two swords later this month on PSN, XBLA and PC.

Choplifter HD confirmed for XBL and PSN release
next week

Choplifter HD confirmed for XBL and PSN release next week screenshot

Konami's upcoming Choplifter HD has now had its release date confirmed and it's coming really soon. The game will be available to PlayStation Network users on the 10th of January, with the Xbox Live Arcade version arriving on the 11th. It's priced at $14.99 and 1200 Microsoft Points, respectively.

Developed by inXile Entertainment, Choplifter HD sticks close to the classic formula of rescuing citizens with your chopper, but it looks like the offensive capabilities have been bumped up too. Oh and there's a zombie mode, of course, plus cameos by Super Meat Boy and Duke Nukem. The latter did it for the "babes," presumably.

Conrad and Hamza both liked what they saw when they played preview builds of Choplifter HD, so it's looking like this will be more than just a glossy make-over of the same old Choplifter of days gone by. We'll find out next week.
