Nintendo Thinks WiiWare Demos Might Be A Good
Idea [Wii]

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says that Nintendo is planning to test downloadable demos of some WiiWare games, a program that should kick off—in Japan at least—later this month.

That's according to IGN's translation of the oft-cited investor Q&A that Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto dropped minor details at last week—nuggets of news that range from Miyamoto's acquisition of a real life cat, Wii MotionPlus support in the next Legend of Zelda game for the Wii, a cooling Wii market, and the possibility of a 3G-enabled Nintendo DS in the future.

Hey, demos are a good idea, just like cat ownership and 3G devices. Maybe you'll find the ArtStyle games, like Cubello up there, tons of fun. And maybe you'll reconsider that purchase of Sexy Poker or Major League Eating: The Game, despite both sounding like excellent fodder for WiiWare games.

We're tapping Nintendo of America on the shoulder to see if we can expect the same treatment here.

Report: North Korean Military Digs Clams, Exports
Fake Nintendo Games [Nintendo]

One would think that the North Korean military is primarily involved with matters of combat. But, as recounted in one amazing Washington Post paragraph, they do other things:

North Korea is perhaps the world's most secretive and repressive state, but it makes no attempt to hide the ubiquitous role the military plays in the daily lives of the country's 23.5 million people. Soldiers dig clams and launch missiles, pick apples and build irrigation canals, market mushrooms and supervise the export of knockoff Nintendo games. They also guard the country's 3,000 cooperative farms, and help themselves to scarce food in a hungry country.

I don't have much to add, but I did want to make sure you sounded more worldly the next time someone asks you what you read on Kotaku recently.

THQ stock loses 12 percent after WWE extension

It seems investors are unhappy that one of THQ's most important relationships continues to be in flux. After the news that the company was extending its renewal notice with the WWE on October 28, its stock has lost 12 percent of its value, according to GameIndustry.biz. When compared to its worth on September 23, the company is down 26 percent.

THQ's convoluted relationship with JAKKS Pacific and the WWE is fully explained here, but it suffices to say that things are pretty messy right now, and it seems the stockholders are getting impatient for tidiness.

Game SERIES Debate to the Death! MGS VS Half-Life

Game SERIES Debate to the Death! MGS VS Half-Life screenshot

Last week's bonus questions brought in even more discussion than the week before, and when you outdo a Zelda and Final Fantasy debate, that's saying something. And boy did you guys and gamer girls have plenty to say. I'm thrilled the new bonus question format is getting so much love! The Half-Life series also got plenty of love, and set a new game debate record for the most winning votes ever:

To see one of the best selling game series of all time get put in its place turned into quite the exciting comments section. For those of you who thought Half-Life was miles beyond Halo's reach, I hope you're ready for what's in store this week.

A few of you trembled in fear last week at just the thought of this debate. It may not be easy, but do your best to choose which series you like better as a whole, and tell us why! What aspects or individual games of the series made up your mind? Is your choice mainly due to support for that series, or your dislike of other series? Give it some serious thought, share your thought process with all of us, and then get some gaming friends to join in on the fun.

New Bonus Questions! Hit the jump to see not one, but all of the bonus questions. From now on I'm going to try a slightly new format to encourage more discussion! Feel free to suggest bonus questions of your own that you'd like to see used in next week's debate topic, which is also listed below.

BONUS QUESTIONS:

BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded!

BQ2. Name one thing you like better about the series you didn't pick.

BQ3. What was your favorite game/episode in each series? Why?

BQ4. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?

BQ5. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?

BQ6. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?

SUBMIT YOUR OWN QUESTIONS:

Each week I will post what next week's debate will be, and allow you to all post your own "bonus questions" in the comments for next week's debate. I'll choose the best of the bunch and then we can get some serious feedback from all different gamer perspectives on not just each game/series, but also a few individual aspects of those games/series. Have something you're dying to know what other games thought of in the game or series? Post your question in the comments and find out what the response is!

NEXT WEEK'S DEBATE:

What's your favorite Legend of Zelda game in the whole series?

As usual, there's always an open door policy on suggesting future game debates in the comments. So don't be shy!

Rare Hopes To Evolve The FPS Genre With Project
Natal [Rare]

Banjo Kazooie and Viva Pinata developer Rare has made some important contributions to the first person shooter genre, a space it hasn't visited since Perfect Dark Zero hit the Xbox 360 in 2005. That may change, thanks to Project Natal.

Rare's Mark Betteridge tells MCV, as part of a feature on the first-person shooter, that the company's "sights are trained on Natal." Betteridge calls the Xbox 360's motion and voice controller a "a great opportunity to break new ground with content and gameplay."

Rare has been said by owner Microsoft to be "intimately involved with Project Natal in a number of different dimensions," according to soon to be ex-Microsoft VP Shane Kim. The developer was reported to be staffing up in anticipation of the Natal launch in 2010. Hopefully, that will help give them the identity that Peter Molyneux thinks they so desperately need.

"[Project Natal is] also an opportunity to exercise some genre evolution," Betteridge says, "so hopefully we'll be able to develop something on that front."

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? If the answer is a first person shooter/boxing game based on the adventures of Killer Instinct's T.J. Combo, than it sounds like we are.

Shoot to thrill [MCV]

Lawyer Sues Over "Seizure Triggers" in Videogames

An attorney in the U.S. is looking for people with children who have suffered seizures as a result of playing videogames, apparently to take part in a planned class action lawsuit against the industry for its failure to "fix" the problem of seizures caused by gaming.

Miyamoto: Next Zelda will use MotionPlus for more
realistic swordplay

Nintendo's resident legend, Shigeru Miyamoto, has revealed that the next installment in the Legend of Zelda series on Wii will make use of Wii MotionPlus for more realistic sword combat and targeting. "In this (installment of the series), we're using MotionPlus to make you feel much more like you're actually fighting while holding a sword in your hand," Miyamoto disclosed during an October 30 Q&A session, as translated by GameLife.

"In the previous game, you aimed at things by pointing at the screen, but this time we'll use MotionPlus to create a much more convenient targeting system and a more pleasurable playing experience," Miyamoto added.

Despite these revelations, Nintendo has yet to officially state whether Wii MotionPlus will be an option or a requirement for playing the game. When this next Zelda was announced during E3 2009, Miyamoto could only say that MotionPlus-exclusivity was "possible." These gameplay elements -- especially the swordplay -- only make it seem more likely.
