(Probably fake) miniature Wipeout track is too
cool

(Probably fake) miniature Wipeout track is too cool screenshot

The first time you see quantum levitation, it's hard not to be blown away. As Arthur C. Clarke said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The Internet, as it turns out, is quick to remind us of this on a daily basis.

The "Japan Institute of Science and Technology" has more directly targeted people like you and me with its work, which brings the concept of futuristic racing series Wipeout to life on a miniature scale. However, the presentation and lack of details surrounding this project make me skeptical that it's legitimate, despite the seemingly magical nature of quantum levitation.

Conceptually, I'm satisfied with this little setup, even if it isn't wholly on the level. I'd buy one. (Assuming it was for real, of course.)

[Thanks, jaya]

Super Meat Boy sells 1 million copies, is still
hard

Super Meat Boy sells 1 million copies, is still hard screenshot

I picked up Super Meat Boy during the Steam Winter Sale way back in 2011. I'd seen and heard quite a bit about the little flab of meat and knew that it was going to be a more challenging platformer. What I didn't know was that it was the kind of "challenging" that caused broken monitors and keyboards. Still, it's a very fun game to play when I'm able to jump over those BLOODY SAWS! Sorry, sorry.

Team Meat have some great news about their unfairly hard platformer (I either let my emotions out here or my laptop will be without a keyboard) as the official Twitter account for Team Meat let its followers know that the game had "past the million sales mark last month." An incredible accomplishment for an indie game made by two people. When asked for comment, Edmund McMillen further told Destructoid that the number is actually now closer to 1.1 million and that about 20% of the sales came from the Xbox LIVE Arcade version, with the rest on PC.

So congratulations to both Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes on their accomplishment! Now, I'm off to love and hate Super Meat Boy some more.

The DTOID Show: It's 2012 and we're back - with
NEWS!

The DTOID Show: It's 2012 and we're back - with NEWS! screenshot

That's right! Now a solid two weeks older and wiser, Max and I are back from holiday vacation with an extended hangover and a handful of hearty news. Because the studio was unexpectedly closed yesterday, we weren't able to bring you an episode as planned, so in its place we have a shorter, news-only segment for you today - it's not terribly long, but it's something at least.

On today's show we cover some hot topics from the past two weeks, including a list of some upcoming PS Vita launch titlesjuicy rumors regarding the Wii-U, and an official unveiling of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2, complete with teaser trailer. Max and I also chat about what games we played during the break, and I'm not at all ashamed to admit my 3DS saw plenty of steamy, hand-on-stylus action. What games satisfied YOUR boredom this holiday season?

Expect details on new IP from Crystal Dynamics
this year

Expect details on new IP from Crystal Dynamics this year screenshot

"Not only will our team be eating, sleeping, and breathing Tomb Raider," writes Crystal Dynamics community and communications manager Meagan Marie, "but we'll also be hard at work preparing to reveal exciting new intellectual property to the world."

A game studio developing a new IP isn't exactly breaking news, though it is good to know that there's some diversification happening in 2012. In this ongoing console cycle, some unexpected twists and turns wouldn't be seen as a bad thing.

With the new Tomb Raider looking as fine as it does, I'm feeling good about Crystal Dynamics' 20th year. (The '90s didn't, in fact, just end.) Guys, when you're done with those games, can we get another Gex over here? I'd love to see a new, M-rated installment along the lines of Conker's Bad Fur Day.
