Wondercon would be little more than a nerdy flea market if it wasn't for San Francisco's vivid cosplay crowd. This year there was noticeable spike in participants and a lot less janky cardboard costumes to boot. We found ourselves surrounded (and smelling) the usual suspects: Storm Stroopers, Pirates, Ninjas and comic book characters from every mainstream and indie universe. Naturally, Marvel and DC off-the-rack clones were out in full force. If I had a dollar for every Wonder Woman I bumped into I might be able to afford the gasoline-priced coffee at the convention center. Eight bucks for a hoagie! What is this, unicorn meat?
Look for more photos from the masquerade, hands-on previews, and quirks from the weekend rush in the coming days. Destructoid was lucky to bump into some staple and unconventional cosplayers from the gaming universe. Check out our gallery - can you name them all?

The NES was no stranger to odd game concepts and designs. Many of these games never left Japan, while others never saw the light of day. So when I heard about Bio Force Ape, a canceled game in which you play a genetically altered pet chimpanzee who must rescue his human family from an army of mutants using a repertoire of pro wrestling moves, I didn't think it sounded all that unorthodox.
Thanks the Internet, prototypes of several unreleased games have been unearthed and dumped for digital preservation. In the case of Bio Force Ape, a string of hoaxes over the years has granted the game a somewhat legendary status. Yesterday, Lost Levels announced that they had finally discovered a copy and were releasing the ROM online. Naturally, I was extremely skeptical, and that this news arrived on April Fools' Day certainly didn't help.
Lo and behold, the ROM actually runs on an emulator. If this were some fan-created hoax, it's one of the more elaborate ones I've seen. Hit the jump for my early impressions.
Hoax or not, this game is pretty badass. Immediately after hitting start, you find the ape on a rooftop locked in battle against some sumo mofo. Before he can make a move, he gets knocked off and falls about a hundred stories before landing flat on his stomach. Without even catching his breath, he gets to his feet and squares off against a bee man.
Aside from being complete nuts, Bio Force Ape sports the most fluid animations I've ever seen on NES hardware. If this game had never been canceled, I guarantee it would have become one the console's great cult classics.
If you want to check out the game for yourself, download the ROM from the Lost Levels link above or watch the playthrough below.

It is my scientific approximation that there are "hella" lot more people here this year than last year, and the event seems to have significantly expanded to suit. When I picked up my pass there were a few people having trouble purchasing passes so if you haven't already registered it might be too late. Unless you have boobs. Boobs solve everything.
As my handsome bastard illustrated, there isn't much for the gaming press to do at Wondercon other than photograph a herd spandexed buttocks. Still, the event is an excellent venue for plebeians who haven't yet faked their way into mainstream gaming events to check out some unreleased games. Nintendo and Capcom have impressive booths showing their latest wares and DC's Green Lantern game has a line around the corner. People are really digging the 3DS as well, as games like Submarine Thing and Kid Icky are out on display.
Check out these photos from the show floor and the booths while you weep softly from your remote location. Wish you were here, it's kinda boring and awesome at the same time!

Bloody Disgusting's Dead Pixels guys revealed that the new Resident Evil movie is a prequel/reboot called Resident Evil: Begins. This story has been picked up by a lot of movie sites since, but the thing is: the source article was posted yesterday. On April 1st.
However, the lovely people at our sister-site Flixist have looked into it, and apparently this is a real thing that is happening. Here is what Dead Pixels said about the supposed prequel, and a number of reasons why it sounds dumb (moreso than a new Resident Evil movie).
According to Dead Pixels -- the videogame fellows at Bloody Disgusting -- Sony Pictures subsidiary Screen Gems is planning Resident Evil: Begins as a prequel that will simultaneously reboot the Resident Evil movie series. A reboot with Jill Valentine as its protagonist, whose actress Sienna Guillory previously tweeted that she was training for "RE:5."

Resident Evil: Begins supposedly takes us back to 1998, before the events of the first Resident Evil movie that centered on the Mansion events. So, before the Raccoon City outbreak actually happened. Milla Jovovich is said to return as Alice, again before the Mansion events. But instead of Alice taking the lead again, Begins will focus on Jill Valentine during the outbreak of the T-virus instead.
Yes, the same outbreak that didn't happen until after the first movie. While that may sound stupid to fans, it makes perfect sense within the Resident Evil movie 'canon' because it's so stupid that there's no reason to doubt they wouldn't do something like this.
Even sillier is the announcement of the possibility of a Resident Evil: Begins videogame tie-in. This proposed game would follow Jill and Alice before the T-virus outbreak, with Jill trying to slow down the virus' spreading -- before there was an outbreak -- and Alice trying to reveal Umbrella for their role in the outbreak and the work they do in the Hive facility.
As a reboot, it wouldn't really reboot the series as much as create a prequel that just goes back and messes with the storyline of the Resident Evil movie universe -- in which Alice only meets Jill for the first time in Resident Evil: Apocalypse -- which in turn has already laid waste to the videogame canon. Of course, we don't know for sure if Alice and Jill will actually meet in Begins.
But do you doubt they wouldn't do something like this? The movies made plenty of money after all, and these days 'Resident Evil canon' doesn't really seem to mean much anymore. Also, the testes of a million horny teenage boys would probably explode if Guillory and Jovovich were to end up in some kind of semi-nude decontamiation sequence for the hell of it.
If you've seen Resident Evil: Afterlife (SPOILER ALERT for a movie from last year!) you'll know that Jill Valentine is wearing the mind control device in the surprise plot twist at the end of that movie. Perhaps the 'reboot' will focus on some sort of parallel timeline of events that will eventually lead up to a sequel to Afterlife? Or maybe it will be Milla's last one to make room for future movies without Alice?
While I was a bit wary of this when I saw it posted on April 1st (although it was posted at 10:24pm), some notable movie sites like Latino Review -- who have broken their share of stories before -- have since reposted it as well. After Flixist's Alex Katz looked into it and told us it looks like really is happening, that laid those suspicions of a prank to rest.
Resident Evil: Begins will be in 3D, because of course it will be. Just like while there's no mention of Paul W.S. Anderson being confirmed as the director, because of course he will direct it. Expect it sometime in 2012 after you're done with Revelations. Can't we just get a sequel to Resident Evil: Degeneration instead?
Please?

Looks like the only Resident Evil we're getting on the Nintendo 3DS this year will be Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D. Capcom's official Resident Evil Facebook page is pegging the other game, Resident Evil: Revelations, for a 2012 release.
Revelations is the narrative driven title of the two, and arguably the one fans are most looking forward. Mercenaries is a portable version of the "Mercenaries" mini-game included in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. It's out this summer, and looks pretty good in its own right. Bonus: it comes with a demo of Revelations!
Capcom has also released some concept art for Revelations, so hopefully that'll keep you sated until we get something more substantial.

The 'latest' Playstation: The Official Magazine has project lead Yosuke Hayashi spilling some details on Ninja Gaiden III -- the first new Ninja Gaiden sans Itagaki. Supposedly, the focus will be on Ryu Hayabusa as a "dark Japanese hero" and “there won’t be new playable characters, but we’ll focus more deeply on Ryu Hyabusa’s life and lifestyle and feelings and thoughts.”
A darker hero sounds familiar, and it makes perfect sense because after all, the Ninja Gaiden series is world-renowned for making the player care for its protagonist's feelings and lifestyle -- shown in the last teaser trailer. Hayashi frames this as "trying to take the violent concepts even deeper and make people realize how it feels to actually kill someone and what it is to actually gut someone," and that "it’s very important to us that people realize that violence is not only about blood and gore."
The core design will also be slightly more accessible, although it's not necessarily going to be easier. Just a bit different, whatever that may mean. Furthermore, Ninja Gaiden III will feature a "complex multiplayer mode" in a simultaneous Xbox 360 and PS3 release. Finally, Hayashi didn't want to say anything about Move support, but mentioned it being a "closely guarded secret."
