Stardash Review (iPhone, iPad, Android)

Gamezebo Rating: 90

Gaming on the go has been almost completely taken over by today?s smartphones. You can see that in the constantly dropping sales figures for the major game company?s handhelds. That said, we?d be fools to forget about where it all started: Nintendo?s original Game Boy. I remember saving up my allowance and birthday money to buy one the day they came out. That thing went with me everywhere, its monochromatic display becoming permanently implanted into my vision. With Stardash, developer Orangepixel has managed to recreate a lot of what made those games and that system so awesome.

GameStop wants you to become the 'Ultimate
Player'

GameStop wants you to become the 'Ultimate Player' screenshot

GameStop is putting together a pretty awesome sweepstakes together to promote Saints Row: The Third. All you have to do to be entered is pre-order the game between September 28th and November 14th and then pick up your copy by November 22nd. Or, if you don't want to purchase the game, you can always put your info on a card and mail it in to GameStop. Here's the potential prize package you could receive:

  • Mitsubishi 92” 3D Home Cinema TV
  • Premium surround sound system
  • Home theater chair
  • 2 Next generation game consoles
  • Saints Row: The Third Collectors’ Editions for both consoles
  • Four collectable posters

It seems weird to me that someone is still calling the Xbox 360 and PS3 "next generation game consoles" in 2011, but I guess that's besides the point. If you're planning on picking up Saints Row: The Third anyway, why not go ahead and make the effort to throw name in the hat? You know you want that 92" 3D TV.

Hudson working on a new Bloody Roar game!

Hudson working on a new Bloody Roar game! screenshot

Remember Bloody Roar, the fighting game in which people could transform into rabbits and boars? Well, in what might be the most surprising news of the weekend, it's coming back!

Hudson confirmed via Twitter that an all new Bloody Roar sequel is in production, with apparent plans to release it in 2012. There is no further news on what Hudson is currently calling Bloody Roar 5, but it's certainly set the Internet afire with speculation. Or at least generated a warm glow of mild bemusement.

I remember my brother playing Bloody Roar like crazy. I bet he's excited. Are you?

King of Fighters XIII delayed to November 22nd

King of Fighters XIII delayed to November 22nd screenshot

If you were expecting to finally get your eager hands on King of Fighters XIII in late-October, you're going to have to wait just a tad longer. Atlus announced earlier this week that the fighter won't be available within the original release window of October, but instead on November 22nd.

Atlus VP of sales and marketing Tim Pivnicny explained the push was made to "ensure that the game delivers on its promise of becoming the finest entry in the series' 15+ year history." That's an awful bold promise to make, but an exciting one nonetheless. To help tide you through the extra time you now have to wait for KoF XIII, Atlus put a nice little trailer together for you to get excited over.

Angry Birds gets ready for Halloween by playing
dress-up

Angry Birds gets ready for Halloween by playing dress-up screenshot

Halloween is almost here, which means goofy theme costumes and toys. Angry Birds is jumping on the bandwagon with themed plushes, and if that isn't enough for you, costumes. So you can decorate your house with little costumed birds and pigs, or be one. The costumes, for children and adults, range in price from $24.99 to $49.99, while the plushes are $15.99 or $17.99 for single birds (at 5" or 8" respectively) or $59.99 and $75.99 for the sets of four.

The plushes are cute, I won't deny that, but I don't get the costumes at all. I like Angry Birds, its a fun game but really? Costumes? I didn't mind the shirts, but this is getting a little ridiculous. The best way to turn me off on something is to over saturate the market, and that is a thing Rivio is doing with their game.

Preview: The Adventures of Tintin: The Game

Preview: The Adventures of Tintin: The Game screenshot

When I got the chance to demo The Adventures of Tintin: The Game, the first question I asked is if Snowy is a playable character. If you’ve watched the cartoons or read the comics, you probably know that Snowy is a sarcastic asshole who can’t hold his drink. And yes, Snowy’s the dog.

He is indeed in the game, but unfortunately, I did not get to play him in the demo. The Adventures of Tintin: The Game is a companion piece to The Adventures of Tintin The Movie expounds on the storyline and settings introduced in the film.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Game (PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, DS, 3DS, Xbox 360 [Previewed])
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft Montreal

Release: December 2011

As for the game itself, there are three modes: the story mode, the co-op mode and the challenge mode. We were able to view four of the mini-games from the story mode that involved typical Tintin adventures -- swordfighting with pirates, shooting from a running vehicle and maneuvering an aircraft.

The swordfighting was more fun than I imagined. From the third-person perspective of Tintin, you get into a tussle with a crew of pirates. With the power of Kinect, you can do two basic moves against them -- slashing and parrying. By slashing, you wave your arm around like the Star Wars kid, only this time you are given the impression that you are actually hitting people. When parrying blows, there would be cues on the screen when to hold up your hand to block.

At one point, the pirates would be shooting cannonballs at you so you have to swing them back at the pirates at the appropriate time. Other pirates would be better protected so you also have to time your strikes whenever they have their shields down.
So yes, the movements were guided, which probably made the game pretty easy once you got the hang of the movements. But it was just so fun, and the visuals and musical scoring really captured the spirit of a swashbuckling adventure.
The next adventure has Tintin driving a bike with Captain Haddock or shooting from the passenger seat, depending on which mode you choose. Hand movements guide the direction of the vehicle and likewise help you aim and shoot at the targets.

In the aerial flight simulation, you have to pretend to fly the plane through hoops in the sky. This is part of Tintin’s mission to take aerial photographs from exotic locales around the world.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Game seems to me like something that can be enjoyed by the young ‘uns but also fans old and new alike. Its fantastical elements breathe new life into longtime fans’ nostalgia while incorporating a little bit everything in its storyline to use the breadth of the Kinect technology.

Nathan Drake is a corporate whore in Subway
commercial

Nathan Drake is a corporate whore in Subway commercial screenshot

"Hey, I'm Nathan Drake. If you're the adventurous type like me, then get in on the Subway taste for adventure," says Nathan Drake in the above video.

The idea of videogames and marketing departments working together is nothing new. We've had Master Chief adorning Mountain Dew bottles and Slurpees made to resemble Kratos. However, the Uncharted 3 star has gone a step further by "acting" in a commercial of his very own. He details the "Taste For Adventure" promo we posted earlier, where you can buy sandwiches in exchange for game content.

It's an interesting idea, but it's also damn hilarious to watch Nathan acting like a corporate prostitute. Commercial products are often photoshopped into a game character's hands as a joke. To see it done sincerely is highly amusing.

So yeah, be a winner like Nathan and eat fresh! He shoots fellow human beings in the face and cracks wise about it, so you need to be just like him.
